AMC Theatres has given Top Gun fans something to lock onto ahead of the franchise’s upcoming theatrical return next month. The exhibitor revealed a new collectible popcorn bucket that channels one of the most recognizable pieces of gear from the original 1986 film.
AMC Theatres reveals Top Gun: Maverick’s new popcorn bucket
AMC Theatres has revealed a new popcorn bucket for the upcoming re-release of Top Gun: Maverick. The bucket takes its design from Maverick’s helmet in the original 1986 film. Notably, AMC announced the launch on its official X (formerly Twitter) account recently.
Both Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick will return to theaters on May 13 for a one-week engagement. Furthermore, the re-release marks the 40th anniversary of the original Top Gun. AMC encouraged fans to “Grab your popcorn bucket wingman to see TOP GUN and TOP GUN: MAVERICK in theatres May 13 for one week only!”
Meanwhile, the re-release coincides with the theatrical debut of Guy Ritchie’s new film, In the Grey, which stars Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal. Currently, Top Gun: Maverick ranks among the highest-grossing movies of all time. Additionally, the 2022 sequel was directed by Joseph Kosinski and runs for around 130 minutes.
Specialty popcorn buckets have become a popular feature of major theatrical releases in recent years. For instance, Dune: Part Two launched a sandworm-shaped bucket that gained widespread attention. Similarly, Project Hail Mary featured a space helmet design, while Deadpool & Wolverine produced a bucket modeled after Wolverine’s face. Moreover, Regal and other theater chains are expected to release their own Top Gun designs.
The original Top Gun, helmed by the late Tony Scott, follows Maverick, played by Tom Cruise, as he trains at the Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School. In the sequel, Maverick returns to the school years later to train a group of recruits for a dangerous mission.
However, a third Top Gun film is currently in development at Paramount, though the studio has not confirmed a release date or plot details.
