As Princess Charlotte celebrates her 11th birthday today, one royal expert believes her confident and poised appearances at Royal Family events are down to one important thing

Perfecting the art of a walkabout and charming the crowd takes some Royal Family members years to learn. But one who seems to have mastered the skill already is Princess Charlotte, who turns 11 today.
The young princess, who has been making more and more public appearances alongside her older brother, Prince George, has looked ever more self assured at high-profile family events. Just last month, as she attended the traditional Easter Sunday church service with the Firm at Windsor Castle, Charlotte strode out in front of her parents the Prince and Princess of Wales, confidently waving to royal fans.

While at Christmas, as the royals greeted the crowds who came out to see them at Sandringham, the third in line to the throne appeared at home as she hugged well-wishers and accepted gifts, with her being compared to a mini version of the late Queen.
And according to royal expert Jennie Bond, Charlotte’s confident, poised and polite manner is all down to one thing – the family life her parents William and Kate have created for her and her older brothers George and Prince Louis.
The former BBC royal correspondent told the Mirror : “I think confidence in any child is born of a happy and stable home life. And that is precisely what William and Catherine have worked so hard at achieving for their children. Judging by the three of them, their parents have done a good job.

“At their recent Easter outing at Windsor, it was Charlotte who looked by far the most at ease in front of the cameras and crowds, offering a little wave in their direction. Like her mother, she seems effortlessly elegant. I think she’s living proof that the Prince and Princess are entirely justified in prioritising their family in the way that they have insisted.
“In recent decades, the royals have, with some justification, been labelled one of the most dysfunctional families in the land. And that needs to change.
“William and Catherine have faced criticism for making that change, by ring-fencing school holidays for example, and by simply being there for their children in the way royals of the past have not always been. And I think it’s making a crucial difference.”
However, despite her delighting in public, Charlotte and her brothers are fiercely protected by William and Kate so they can all grow up and enjoy their school lives at Lambrook School in relative privacy.

And like any other 11-year-old, when her parents have shared details about her, she appears to be like any other young girl, with a love of dancing, gymnastics, and, of course, Taylor Swift.
Previously, dad William has spoken several times about her love of exchanging friendship bracelets, a Taylor Swift-inspired craze. In 2024, on a trip to South Africa for his Earthshot Prize Awards, the Prince of Wales was seen proudly wearing a beaded bracelet with the name ‘Papa’ on it, made by his daughter to remind him of home.
Meanwhile, Kate has revealed her daughter’s love of dance, especially ballet, which is something she shares with her late grandmother, Princess Diana.

And Jennie added: “Also like her mother, she is sporty and, by all accounts, is keen on trying her hand at all sorts of activities – from tap dancing to tennis, hurdles to horse riding.”
Of course at 11 years old, Charlotte has the rest of her school and potentially university life ahead of her – but will royal duties await her, like they will her older brother George?
Jennie believes so and explained: “I suspect that a life of full-time royal duty does eventually await the young princess – given the dwindling number of working Royals. But I don’t think it’s something that her parents will insist on if, in the end, it’s really something she doesn’t want to do. This is a new era and one which, I think, will afford some of the young royals, a little more choice. That I think, is only fair.”
However, today Charlotte and her family will be celebrating, although her grandfather, the King, might not be on hand at any party, given that he is on the last day of his trip to the United States and Bermuda.
And Jennie predicted: “Charlotte will be celebrating her birthday on a Saturday, which, at Lambrook, still involves some school time. But I’m sure there will be the chance to celebrate in the evening, no doubt with one of Catherine’s famous home-made birthday cakes.”
