Martin Scorsese is back behind the camera — and this time he’s making what could be the most unsettling film of his legendary career. What Happens at Night is a Gothic psychological horror thriller adapted from Peter Cameron’s acclaimed 2020 novel of the same name, with the screenplay written by Oscar-nominated Patrick Marber, the writer behind Closer and Notes on a Scandal. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence as an unnamed married American couple who travel to a mysterious, snow-covered European town to adopt a baby. The wife is battling terminal cancer and hopes that by securing this child, her husband won’t be left completely alone after her death. But when they arrive at the vast, eerily deserted Borgarfjaroasysla Grand Imperial Hotel, reality begins to dissolve. They encounter an aging flamboyant chanteuse, a debauched businessman, and an enigmatic faith healer named Brother Emmanuel — played by Mads Mikkelsen — whose presence changes everything. The more the couple struggles to claim their baby, the less they seem to know about their marriage, themselves, and life itself. The supporting cast also includes Jared Harris and Patricia Clarkson. This marks the seventh collaboration between Scorsese and DiCaprio — a partnership that has produced Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, and the ten-time Oscar-nominated Killers of the Flower Moon. Their combined filmography has earned thirty-one Academy Award nominations and nine wins. It is also the first time Jennifer Lawrence has been directed by Scorsese. The trio was previously set to collaborate on a Frank Sinatra biopic before that project was postponed. Apple Original Films is producing in partnership with Studiocanal, and principal photography began on February 24th, 2026 in the Czech Republic. DiCaprio has revealed that Scorsese had him rewatch Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo as a tonal reference point. Critics have described the source novel as Kafka meets Wes Anderson. No release date has been set yet.
