Former WNBA superstar Sue Bird attended the Kentucky Derby on Saturday – and ignored the longtime dress code recommendations with her outfit.
Bird, 45, rocked a beautiful white suit, with a grey top – and not hat – while attending the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville.
Women are often encouraged to wear dresses but, most importantly, big hats at the Kentucky Derby, per the official dress code recommendations.
“Women typically wear bold, stylish outfits centered around statement hats. Think pastel dresses, peplum styles, and elegant accessories. Comfortable yet chic shoes like wedges or flats are a must, and all accessories should follow Churchill Downs policy,” the dress code reads.
Bird opted against wearing a hat, though.
Fans were quick to notice that Bird opted against the hat.
“The Derby is the time to shine! Where’s your hat, girl?” one wrote.
“Where’s the hat???” one fan added.
“The hat is the best part of the Kentucky Derby! She’s missing out,” one shared.
The Kentucky Derby dress code is simply a recommendation, though. Women do not have to wear hats if they don’t want to.
“The Kentucky Derby has a dress code that encourages guests to wear upscale attire. This often includes hats for women and suits or dresses for both men and women,” the dress code reads.
Bird has had a tough week
The WNBA legend and her longtime girlfriend, Megan Rapinoe, broke up last month, calling it quits after roughly a decade of dating that included an engagement.
“There really is no smooth or easy way to share this news,” they wrote in an Instagram post. “After a lot of thought, we’ve made the decision to separate as a couple.
“This hasn’t been an easy decision, but it’s one we’ve made together, with so much love, respect, and care for each other.”
