Princess Kate, whose full name is Catherine, was allegedly asked to change her name by some members of the royal family after marrying Prince William.
According to a Wednesday, May 6, report in Marie Claire, royal biographer Christopher Andersen claimed in his book Kate!: The Courage, Grace, and Power of the Woman Who Will Be Queen that she was asked to change “Catherine” to “Katherine.”
After the Princess of Wales, 44, tied the knot with William, 43, the late Queen Elizabeth II gave them the titles of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
King Charles III (then Prince Charles) and his wife, Queen Camilla (then Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall), allegedly thought there would be too many Cs, since they reportedly had a royal monogram of two interlocking Cs beneath a coronet.
Charles, 77, and Camilla, 78, allegedly thought another C monogram “was overkill,” per Marie Claire.

According to the publication, Kate was allegedly “offended” at the time, and her husband was “fuming,” calling the request “insulting, not only to Kate but to her entire family.”
Prince Harry also reportedly wrote about the ordeal in his 2023 memoir Spare.
“I remembered the time [Charles] and Camilla wanted Kate to change the spelling of her name, because there were already two royal cyphers with a C and a crown above,” the Duke of Sussex wrote, per Marie Claire.
“Charles and Camilla. It would be too confusing to have another,” he said. “Make it Katherine with a K, they suggested. I wondered now what came of that suggestion.”
