Yeah, I had this conversation with my grandma the other day. She is confused that I don’t want kids. I have nieces and nephews I love and I am close with my best friends kids. I dont want kids cuz I dont want to raise or be responsible for them, not cuz I don’t love them. Fun Aunt is something I can pull off, being a mother would destroy me.
But, my grandma wasn’t a particularly warm or pleasant mother. I’m not even sure if she wanted to be one, just felt like she had to. So to see me, just living my life, doing what I want galls her or something. But, no grandma going to some sports practice every night and relearning algebra does not sound fun. Hubby and I are going to a concert in the city this weekend and staying out till 2 am. My siblings with kids will be in bed by 9 and need a babysitter to even consider going out.

Kind of rude to ask a gay eldery man at this stage in life

I’m in my mid 40’s, my wife and I have a couple employees in their late teens, early 20’s and we constantly refer to them as our “kids.”

I think we’d all be better off if more people made an effort to take care of the younger people in their lives, including and especially those that they’re not related to.

Honestly at this point in my life I consider my friends more my true family than the people I share blood with. I think ultimately family is the people who make you feel safe and loved in this world

Was this interview filmed at The Grapes?

I saw a comment on Instagram a while ago that said ‘I know I’d be a good mum, but I wouldn’t be a happy one’ and that resonated with me so much. We tried for years to conceive, but it caused me such severe depression that my doctor advised us that maybe it wasn’t the right path for us.
Life has been so much better since we stopped, and we are both happy with our decision. Children are amazing, but they’re not for us and that’s okay.

I was sixteen and ran away from home. An elderly woman found me, immediately took me in and kept me safe, gave me a job, found me housing, took care of me. She didn’t have kids of her own, had never wanted any. I am immeasurably grateful to her. She was like the mother I never had. People like her and Ian are invaluable to the younger generation, truly.
I plan on having a family of my own, but I think this is a really cool thing to say. We have to normalize the fact that not everyone wants to or even should honestly have kids. And family is such a broad term anyways so more of this!
