Nova has been watching from Zalem long enough to understand exactly what Alita cannot bring herself to destroy. Rosa Salazar’s Alita has grown into the most feared warrior the Badlands has ever produced, battle-worn and relentless, carrying everything Iron City made her into every fight. Edward Norton plays Nova with the particular menace of a man who never raises his voice because he has never needed to, standing at perfect posture above everything and everyone, deciding that the one weapon Alita cannot counter is the one built from her own blood. Charlize Theron plays Lyra, Alita’s mother, resurrected from whatever Nova could recover and reprogrammed into the most dangerous thing he has ever deployed, mirror-polished and elegant and moving through every scene with a cold precision that has her daughter’s instincts underneath it and someone else’s orders over the top. Alita refuses to fight her. Not out of weakness but out of the one certainty she has carried since Iron City that no amount of war has managed to take from her. She breaks through instead, reaching past the programming for the buried memories underneath, and what wakes up in Lyra’s eyes changes everything about the direction this war was supposed to go. Liam Neeson’s Ido watches from the workshop and knows that what these two women are about to bring to Nova’s doorstep is something Zalem has never once had to prepare for.
Nine to eleven hours on this one. The mother and daughter arc demanded real emotional precision across every cut. Went deep into the source material and the first film. Multiple tools, multiple passes. Every frame built to earn that reunion.
