the guy ate melted ice cream to gain weight for the role only to be replaced by a standard looking Wahlberg. I still didn’t mind the movie, it had its flaws but Ronan, Sarandon, Iver, and Tucci were all great in it. But that’s got to be a real kick in the pants for Gosling to lose a role like that

Huh I did not know Ryan was supposed to play the dad. No wonder why Mark felt so miscast

Gosling DID make that decision without actually talking to Jackson about it, he just showed up having gained 60 pounds.

Edit to add: also no amount of weight gained or lost was going to make it look like Ryan Gosling could be Saoirse Ronan’s dad.

That’s actually crazy they recast Ryan Gosling for gaining too much weight prepping for the role!! I don’t remember hearing about this at the time

The movie came out in 2009. Is there really nothing more recent that People could be writing about than behind the scenes drama of a 17 year old movie?

    6. They cast it because of the name. He gain weight because he is a name and can do as he pleased. Then discover he is too young for the part and toss it. You don’t know how old he was? Just an industry of big ego’s clashing

    7. Everything else aside, I always liked how both of them talked about it. Neither was casting any blame, Ryan always said he should have consulted Jackson about the weight choice, and Jackson just said hat Gosling was replaced because he looked too young. I always thought that was classy.

I will never understand people who go through extreme weight changes for a role. Is any role worth long term impacts to your health?

This feels very on brand for Ryan Gosling – IIRC, in The Notebook Gosling approached James Garner about their eye colour differences and how to handle it, possibly intimating who should wear the contact lens to make it consistent and Garner basically more or less said : I’m just here to act son, so do what you gotta do….

    10. I didn’t mind Mark at all while watching the movie. And back then I didn’t know Ryan was initially involved.

Yeah, I personally would have enjoyed the flick a helluva lot more if it starred a guy who *didn’t* ~~blind a Vietnamese man~~ beat the shit out of a blind Vietnamese man but hey that’s just me

    12. The entire casting drama here ultimately comes down to Peter Jackson casting 26 year old Ryan Gosling to play the father of 14 year old Saoirse Ronan. He was always too young. Then on top of that, Fran Walsh said in an interview years ago that Ryan came to them with his concerns, and they just kept assuring him that he was right for the role and they would age him up. Ryan has mentioned on several occasions that it was never truly about the weight but that the weight was just indicative of how they were on completely different pages about the character. But all of that gets ignored because everyone wants to point at laugh at Ryan gaining a ton of weight only to be fired. And for the record, he wasn’t even fat. He was six feet tall and 210 pounds. He was completely and utterly normal.

I still think it didn’t make sense a random high school kid beating up Mark Wahlberg in a cornfield. A pudgy Gosling would make sense.
