Scarlett Johansson is officially joining the list of actors to appear in both Marvel and DC films, as she has been confirmed for the cast of The Batman Part II, which seems to be finally filming after lengthy delays.

Director Matt Reeves announced the Black Widow actor for his superhero sequel, alongside other Marvel Cinematic Universe stars Sebastian Stan and Brian Tyree Henry, as well as Charles Dance and Sebastian Koch.

Reeves announced the new and returning cast members with GIFs on social media, and while he didn’t announce exactly who the DC newbies were playing, fans think that the GIF choice for Johansson especially is essentially a character confirmation.

“Next exit, Gotham…” Reeves wrote, alongside a GIF of Johansson in the 2013 film Under the Skin, where she sports a wavy black bob.

Fans are convinced that Reeves’ GIF choice is his way of announcing that she is playing Gilda Dent – the wife of district attorney-turned-villain Harvey Dent/Two-Face, who undergoes a villainous streak of her own in the story The Long Halloween – a character who famously sports a similar hairstyle.

“That’s Gilda Dent alright”, wrote one fan in the replies, while another said: “Scarlett Johansson saying ‘I Believe in Harvey Dent’ is gonna be so iconic”.

Over on Reddit, the sentiment is pretty similar, with comments such as: “Pretty much 100% likely she is Gilda Dent,” and “The Gilda Dent rumours are true!”.

The rumours in question state that Sebastian Stan is playing Harvey Dent himself, while Charles Dance is playing Harvey’s father.

And while Reeves’ GIF choice lends credibility to that choice, to the point where multiple outlets are reporting that it’s true, it’s not confirmed with a capital C until we hear direct from Reeves, Warner Bros, or the actors themselves.

One thing we have heard from the actors is a tantalising tease from Robert Pattinson, who recently stated: “The first one was like a little bit of a different type of Batman movie, and this is like really a different type of Batman movie. I think hopefully people will be really pleasantly surprised by it.”

The Batman: Part II is scheduled to be released in cinemas on 1 October 2027.
