When it comes to war films, according to audiences, this one is essential viewing as it adapts Shakespeare’s work and brings it vividly to the screen.

Arriving in 2019, this sweeping historical epic has remained somewhat overlooked despite boasting an impressive ensemble cast, yet devotees of the picture are eager to champion it.

The King is a commanding film, helmed by David Michôd, drawing from Shakespeare’s Henriad to tell the tale of the youthful King Henry V and his ascension to power following his father’s death.

At just 16, the king must assume command of England and navigate its complex political landscape, while confronting the conflict left behind by his predecessor.

Hollywood star Timothée Chalamet was only 23 when he embodied the historical monarch in The King, yet his turn is exceptional, earning considerable acclaim from audiences.

Joining him is Robert Pattinson, who plays the Dauphin, and Lily-Rose Depp as Princess Catherine of Valois.

One admirer posted their thoughts on Rotten Tomatoes, writing: “This movie is way underrated, and I’m not sure why it’s not talked about more, especially in regard to Chalamet’s performance. I’ve seen it 4 times, and each time I enjoy it more and more.

“It’s so well designed and seamless. Every time I watch it, there are new things I notice and appreciate. I’m always especially in awe of the closing scenes.”

A separate review says: “Great acting. Dialogue was quite Shakespearean, though Falstaff was a lot less fun. Grittier take on Henry V.”

While the film’s greatest acclaim centres on Chalamet’s youthful performance, it surprisingly missed out on any major award nominations. His portrayal of Henry V of England serves as the compelling heart of the gripping narrative.

“Chalamet not only showcases his remarkable acting skills but also solidifies his status as a true movie star. Unlike many actors who might gravitate toward light-hearted roles or superhero franchises, he is strategically selecting projects that highlight his talent and keep him in the conversation for awards, demonstrating a commitment to meaningful filmmaking without compromising his artistic integrity.”

The period drama has proved popular despite some criticism regarding historical accuracy surrounding Henry’s rule, though it serves as an adaptation of Shakespeare’s plays rather than a documentary recreation of actual events.

Audiences remain captivated by the spectacular warfare, developing love stories and, naturally, the outstanding performances.

When accepting this demanding part, Chalamet admitted it was “terrifying”, particularly during the combat sequences.

His approach, he explains, centred on “surviving” instead of appearing heroic, as he wanted to deliver an authentic and chaotic depiction of medieval warfare.

The film bypassed theatrical release entirely, launching directly on Netflix in October 2019, where subscribers have been discovering it continuously since.

The King continues to split opinion amongst viewers, but is currently available to stream on Netflix if you’re keen to immerse yourself in a fresh historical drama.
