The Drama, the “unforgettable” romantic black comedy starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, is now available to watch at home in the UK. From writer-director Kristoffer Borgli, the film is one of the most-discussed of the year so far.

The film sees the central duo portray Emma Harwood and Charlie Thompson, a couple based in New York City who are preparing for their wedding. A spanner is thrown in the works, however, when Emma reveals a long-held secret.

After being theatrically released in April, the film is now available to buy or rent in the UK. On Prime Video and Apple TV, you can rent in Standard, High or Ultra-High Definition for £15.99, or alternatively buy it outright for £19.99.

Despite generating some controversy for its subject matter, The Drama was a success at the box office, making $125 million against a budget of $28 million. Furthermore, it has an approval rating of 76% on Rotten Tomatoes from 275 reviews.

In Digital Spy’s three-star review of the film, we called it “often-uncomfortable” and “provocative”, writing: “If the point of art is to create debate, then The Drama provides a feast for post-viewing discussion.

“There’s not an easy answer to be found to the central issue that’s raised here, and nor should there be. It’s a movie made to be debated and mulled over, and while it’s far from flawless, we’ll always RSVP to a movie like that,” we added.

“This film is bleak, witty, organized chaos that’s cringey, but digestible thanks to the sensational performances by the entire cast and the riveting, unforgettable premise,” noted Alliance of Women Film Journalists.

“Borgli’s sharp writing achieves a precarious balance of provocation and bad taste. And the craft of the picture is impressive. But the film’s wit, daring and overall success is largely owed to the formidable performances by Zendaya and Pattinson,” opined The Observer.

Chicago Reader was more muted, however, writing: “The physicality of Zendaya and Pattinson’s performances save the story from some of its shortcomings, but in the end, the questions raised are more interesting than the attempts to answer them.”

While we won’t spoil the film’s big reveal here, we did discuss it at length in an opinion piece, noting that Borgli goes beyond “cheap jokes” to reveal some “dark truths” rather than merely being “sensationalist”.
