Julia Louis-Dreyfus still thinks about the time she stole a peppermint patty back in the third grade: “The guilt and the shame of that moment is with me to this day”

When I was 7 stole a little rose shaped soap that was part of a set and already broken out of its original packaging at a Ross and it took me FOREVER to lose the guilt. That was the only thing I’ve ever stolen, so I can relate lol

Knowing that she’s a billionaire really makes this “stole a peppermint patty” story a lot less cute to me lol

My mom thought I was naturally lucky (????) because I kept finding things outside. Games, toys, school supplies, books. They’d be dirty, but usable. I was stealing from every store we visited. I’d run to a bus stop or something ahead of her & my brother, partially bury an item, then “find” it while we waited.

She saw me throw a pack of bubble tape out of my pocket and “find” it. That’s when she realized lol. I was like 7. She made me go back to QT, return the gum, and apologize. I kept stealing until I was 13 or so.

I will never forget “stealing” Garfield’s Big Fat Scary Joke Book from my 2nd grade teacher’s classroom. We were allowed to take books home, but had to bring them back in a certain number of days. I had forgotten about it for several weeks and was too afraid to bring it back late (despite her loving me and being the nicest teacher ever), so I kept it. I coloured over my teacher’s name on the inside cover in black marker and buried it deep in my bookshelf. I felt like a terrible kid for a long time after that. Sorry, Mrs. D!

I have a comment about stealing a piece of candy when I was like 4 and it got featured in a BuzzFeed article because the store I stole it from went out of business like a week later and thought it was my fault all those people lost their jobs for yeeeears so I definitely sympathize with the endless guilt

I’m so sorry but I am tired of pretending billionaires are relatable

When I was a kid I was a really really good thief. I would steal shit from school all the time. And I was also a really good liar, so I never got caught. Sorry to my primary school 💔

The only thing I recall stealing was a donut with my friend. We were in Walmart at the baked goods section. They had a case with open donuts and we just both ate one. Thinking about I wonder how often someone does that or if a kid would just try to grab and eat one.

I stole a chocolate chip cookie from a substitute teacher in one of my middle school classes. She had it on a paper plate behind her desk and when everyone was working on something and she was walking around monitoring, someone dared me to take it.  I grabbed it and held on to it until the teacher noticed eventually and lost her shit. She interrogated the class as a whole but I never owned up to it.  In fact, while she was yelling at me I passed it off to another kid who tossed it into a cubby next to him.

I can still see the surprised look on the other kids face as I tossed the cookie at him and I can still feel the guilt and shame from taking it in the first place. She was probably looking forward to that cookie as a little reward for a long day of subbing. I’m sorry, substitute lady!!!!

    10. lol I did the same thing with a peppermint patty at that age but didn’t quite mean to steal it, I was just still asking if we could buy as we walked to the car lol. He marched me right back in there to return it and apologize for my crime lol.

When I was a kid, I singlehandedly shut down Woolworths by nicking their pick-n-mix.

    12. There’s something about Molly Gordon’s face I find so captivating. I love that in an actor, when they just have something that draws you in.

I was at Michael’s in high school and I pulled some loose fabric flowers from a bin where they kept the fake bouquets. I made them into barrettes. Don’t feel guilty then or now but it’s the only time I’ve stolen something from a store.

    14. she’s so funny. a few weeks ago i accidentally forgot to scan a thing of yogurt at walmart at self-checkout and didn’t realize it until i was putting my groceries in my trunk. i didn’t feel like going back in so i was like whatever, it’s mine now.

i went back to that same walmart last week for something and that childhood guilt crept up in me and felt like the workers were gonna tackle me SWAT team style.

I know there’s a lot to be angry about these days, but there’s something unsettling about the number of people in this thread who are unable to process the fact that she’s clearly joking.

So smart too – and gutsy! I’d at least wait until everyone was asleep but doing it straight after and walking right behind your mom? Wow she’s cool under pressure

Lmao I stole one of those fake flowers at Hobby Lobby once as a kid and my mom told me I was going to jail

I’ll never forget being 7 in a Macy’s, walking around with a bracelet I had liked. I wasn’t wearing it but I was holding it in my hands and completely forgot about it. The alarm shrieked when we were walking out and I jumped and threw the bracelet across the floor immediately 😂 It’s like my body knew what was happening even though my brain didn’t lol. I still remember the look of a worker walking towards us disapprovingly and I felt so ashamed lmao!!

I never felt guilty for stealing from big box stores as a kid because my dad did insurance claims for some retail places.
