A long lost pencil test from the original first draft of “Tangled” (then called Rapunzel Unbraided) was posted by Disney animator John Ripa. At the time Glen Keane was considering Jack Black in the role of the character that became Flynn Ryder, so they tested with dialogue taken from “Tenacious D”.

      >This is probably the last 2d animation I did at Disney before getting into story. I found a xerox of it in a box of my old Disney animation. I scanned it and put it back together.

      >Here’s what it is: animated films can go through a lot of iterations. This was for a version of Tangled, before it was called Tangled. It was called Rapunzel Unbraided. In this version Glen Keane was thinking of Jack Black as the voice of a character from current time that gets pulled into the Rapunzel fairytale as the prince. He wanted to send Jack Black an animation test with his voice to sell him on the film. Because there were no CG models built yet he asked me to animate something.

      >So I found a piece of dialogue from the Tenacious D tv show, spent a few days really studying Jack Black’s mannerisms and expressions from some of his feature films. Then animated this in about two weeks. I don’t know if it ever reached Jack Black because the story completely changed after that. But I had a lot of fun doing it. It’s missing a few drawings on the close up that I couldn’t find but I hope people enjoy seeing it.

      >The character design was either by Glen, or Jin Kim, I don’t recall which, but it was one of them.

Flynn is objectively my favorite prince but seeing this, knowing it was supposed to be 2D, Jack Black & Mandy Moore…… we were robbed

    3. We can still make this work! Just put it towards a new story-

What about like a medieval fantasy version of Orpheus traveling to the underworld to save his fiance?

Jack Black singing lots of songs, including some metal ones in the underworld- but a happy ending where Jack wins back his Bride in good old fashioned happy Disney ending fashion
