Marcus Vane went into the jungle looking for something and found something that was not on any map and had been waiting longer than maps have existed. Keanu Reeves plays Marcus, weathered and sharp-jawed and pushing through dense ancient overgrowth until the temple finds him rather than the other way around, its walls covered in carvings and its floors lined with snakes and at its center one enormous white serpent coiled around a stone throne with silver eyes that carry a thousand years of intention. The bite does not kill him. It rewrites him. Iridescent dark charcoal scales spread across his skin, his eyes shift to cold yellow slits, his tongue splits, and every sense he was born with detonates into something that makes the human versions feel like drafts. He makes it back to the city and moves through crowds with his hood up and his jaw set until a moment of danger strips the option of hiding away and the city sees what came back from the jungle. Dwayne Johnson’s General Harlan Cross has been watching jungle signals long enough that the reveal is not a surprise, only a confirmation, and he mobilizes with the particular efficiency of a man who has been waiting for a target to go public. Amanda Seyfried plays Lena, refusing to abandon the man she knows is still underneath the scales, torn between fear and the fierce certainty that love does not have a threshold past which it stops counting. The trailer ends on a rooftop at night, Marcus standing above the city with scales catching every light below him, Cross’s helicopters closing in from every direction, and something behind those yellow eyes that has stopped running.
Nine to eleven hours on this one. Keeping Marcus human enough underneath the transformation that Lena’s choice always feels earned took multiple full passes. Multiple tools, real care with the city reveal sequence. Every scale placed with intention.
