The Prince William Chamber of Commerce’s Men’s Wellness Committee recently issued a challenge with a simple but powerful goal: encourage men to take control of their health through proactive screenings. Attendees were asked to complete a series of routine and preventive tests—including PSA and testosterone screenings—to establish a personal health baseline.
This initiative, supported by GameDay Men’s Health Gainesville, focused on raising awareness about the importance of early detection, ongoing monitoring, and making men’s health a community conversation rather than a private concern.
Building a Stronger Foundation for Men’s Health
“Most men don’t know that their testosterone level declines about one percent every year after they turn twenty,” explained Josh Oldham of GameDay Men’s Health. “There are other conditions that can accelerate that decline, such as sleep apnea and a high body fat percentage. A baseline testosterone test shows whether you are hormonally optimized—the base level for all other metabolic processes, including brain function and muscle production.”
The PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) blood test also plays a critical role in men’s long-term wellness. “PSA is a blood test measuring prostate health,” Oldham added. “It’s the leading way to detect early signs of prostate cancer.”
Both screenings, he emphasized, give men and their doctors valuable data points to guide prevention and care long before symptoms appear.
Recognizing the Early Signs
Oldham noted that low testosterone often develops gradually, and its early warning signs are easy to overlook. “Key early signs of low testosterone are brain fog, low motivation potential—the threshold for action feels higher than it should—midday energy crashes, fatigue, depression, and working out without effect,” he said. “Later signs can include lower bone density, severe depression, gynecomastia, and increased fat storage.”
Understanding these symptoms can help men start a conversation with their doctor before more serious complications arise.
Creating a Comfortable Space for Care
GameDay Men’s Health Gainesville takes a unique approach to men’s healthcare by making the experience comfortable and accessible. “We offer both PSA and testosterone tests for free for every man that comes through for an appointment—whether they start treatment with us or not,” Oldham said.
He added that GameDay strives to make their clinic a place where men feel at ease. “We’ve created a modern medical office complete with big-screen TVs and a lounge where men can watch the game while they wait. Our goal is to create a community space where men can feel comfortable talking about what’s going on with them and sharing their successes and needs with the people around them.”
Recommended Screenings for Men
The Chamber’s Men’s Wellness Committee and GameDay Men’s Health encourage men to discuss the following screenings with their healthcare providers:
Physical Exam – Annual checkup to review overall health and medical history
Blood Pressure Check – Detects hypertension before symptoms appear
Blood Tests & Urinalysis – Screens for cholesterol, diabetes, thyroid, and kidney health
EKG – Identifies heart irregularities
Rectal Exam & PSA Blood Test – Detects prostate or colon issues
Testosterone Screening – Assesses hormone levels and metabolic balance
Hemoccult/Colorectal Screenings – Detects hidden blood or polyps in the colon
Bone Density Test – Evaluates bone strength
STD and TB Screenings – Based on risk and exposure
Self-Exams – Monthly checks for skin, oral, and testicular changes
