      Genuine question as I’ve never been – How long is the Walk of Fame now? Is it even worth it to get a star if the only empty spots are blocks away from the original spot?

      Yes, the star is paid for, but not just anyone can buy a star. You have to be nominated first, be chosen by the selection committee, and then the fee is submitted to get your star.
