TalkTV’s Mark Dolan was joined by royal journalist Sarah-Louise Robertson to discuss Prince Harry’s royal titles following reports that Prince William will have a “tougher stance” on Harry and Meghan Markle. The couple officially stepped back from their royal duties in 2020, but the King has allowed them to keep their titles of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Addressing the likelihood of Prince William being firmer on his brother during his reign, Mark stated: “The problem with Charles, and I don’t want to criticise him because I really like our King as well, but he’s creating a problem for William in the future.
“When William becomes king, if Harry is in play as a royal, that’s a major headache for William.” TalkTV guest, Sarah-Louise, agreed: “Well, this is it, because at the moment Charles had made Harry a councillor of state,” to which the presenter interjected: “Terrible.” Before revealing the one condition, Harry could retain his titles, the royal journalist continued: “This is a problem, this is what I think William will do, when he takes the throne.”
Sarah-Louise suggested: “This will obviously hinge on whether Harry will still be married to that woman, Meghan Markle, so this all depends on that. If Harry is still married to Meghan, William will strip the titles.”
”You’ve heard it here first, he will strip the titles, but if Harry’s divorced from Meghan at the point, which he could be, who knows, it’s a long time yet in the future … William may take a different approach,” she added.
“A less harsher approach and say, ‘OK, he’s now away from that woman, I’m going to try and repair my relationship with him. It’ll take time, but let’s bring him back into the Royal Family.’”
The royal journalist disclaimed: “This is all hypothetical, if Harry is no longer with Meghan, but if he is still with Meghan, bye-bye, no more Duke and Duchess. That will be gone.”
Mark then questioned: “Do you think a divorce between Meghan and Harry is now inevitable?”
To which Sarah admitted: “I’m amazed they got to this long, only because Harry’s got two children with her. And one of the children was born in America, so he can’t legally take Lilli, the youngest, out of the state and bring her back here. It’s a very hard situation for Harry.”
When Harry and Meghan moved to California and pursued commercial success in the US, Buckingham Palace said that the couple would “not use their HRH titles as they are no longer working members of the Royal Family”.
However, in April 2025, the BBC reported that HRH was still being used by the Sussexes in a private capacity. Additionally, similar titles have been used for their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
