Before the modern world there was Bedrock, and before Bedrock there was a man finishing his shift at the quarry, hollering Yabba Dabba Doo down a street full of stone houses and dinosaur-powered everything, pulling into his driveway to find Wilma at the door and Dino already airborne and headed straight for his face. Dwayne Johnson plays Fred Flintstone with every ounce of that massive frame pointed at being the best provider his family has ever had, warm and loud and just reckless enough to say yes to the wrong opportunity when it arrives wearing the right suit. Amanda Seyfried plays Wilma, graceful and sharp and several steps ahead of everyone in every room, noticing the things Fred is too hopeful to notice. Paul Rudd plays Barney the way only Paul Rudd can, round-faced and loyal and absolutely unwilling to abandon his best friend even when the best friend is clearly making a spectacular mistake. Cliff Vandercave arrives with plans to industrialize Bedrock and a drilling machine that would tear through the prehistoric wilderness surrounding the city, and Fred gets handed exactly the promotion he has been chasing without reading the fine print on what it costs. The moment he does read it everything changes. Fred at the drilling site surrounded by runaway dinosaurs and collapsing stone machinery and Baby Puss causing chaos at the single worst possible moment is the specific kind of beautiful disaster that only a man built like Dwayne Johnson trying to save his neighborhood can produce. Bedrock glows golden at sunset and the family is still standing.

Eight to ten hours on this one. Getting the comedy and the genuine heart to sit in the same frame without one undermining the other took real tonal work. Multiple tools, multiple passes. Yabba Dabba Doo earned every frame.
