Gayle King had a much stronger reaction than Oprah Winfrey to longstanding rumors that they are “secretly gay,” once begging her friend to shut down the widespread speculation.
King, 71, and Oprah, 72, have been best friends for 50 years. But for much of this period, rumors swirled that they were in a romantic relationship.
“It used to really bother me,” King confessed. “I was recently divorced, and there was —The National Enquirer did a story about, that’s the reason for the divorce, because they’re secretly gay. Number one, if we were gay, we would tell you because, believe me, there’s nothing wrong with it. It’s just, I prefer a man.”
King then told Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast that she had asked Oprah to help her shut down the rumors.

I get that it’s easy to say when people aren’t speculating about your sexuality and relationship with your best friend, which is incredibly invasive regardless of sexuality, but Oprah was right. It’s really better to just ignore rather than 1) bring more attention on it and 2) have everyone say “they protest too much.”
I have issues with her but Oprah didn’t get to where she is by being stupid.
If this was the worst thing most of us common folk had to worry about… Why even bring it up again?

Well, I’m begging her to debunk the astronaut rumors. And I still haven’t heard back.
She’s worried abt the backlash from rumors she + Oprah are gay, but not abt the backlash from Bezos giving her a ridiculously strange ride in his rocket to the edge of space. 🥴
I wish she would have begged her to not foist Drs Phil and Oz on us.
