Olivia Rodrigo on babydoll dress backlash: “I’ve been on stage in a sparkly bra & little shorts — which is my right… That wasn’t inappropriate, but me fully covered up in a dress that people deem to be childlike was inappropriate… It just shows how we just really normalize pedophilia in our culture”

    1. I’ll never not be impressed by how smart Olivia is. She has a perspective of her own and isn’t afraid to share it.

    2. I found the whole thing to be such a nothing burger on such an advocate for women.

    3. I said this when the discourse first started but there seems to be a hate train on Olivia right now and I’m not buying into it.

    4. Glad she addressed it. I never found this looks sexy. It always felt like a tribute to Courtney Love to me.

She’s absolutely not wrong. Look at her outfits during the GUTS Tour; people are taking more issue with the baby doll dresses than basically sequined underwear.

She should be able to wear what she wants without people throwing a fit about. There are artists referencing Lolita and I’m supposed to be worried about Olivia’s baby doll dresses because *that* is allegedly making the pedos hot? Please.

This is unserious Stan twitter discourse. Why is being discussed by the nyt???. Is there no serious cultural criticism anymore? everything is something some girl said on TikTok.

The concept of hating on one of the few mainstream artists who uses their platform to advocate for abortion rights is insane to me

Is there a problem rn w sexualizing underage girls? Yes. Has been for a very long time and people are on edge about it.

Olivia’s dress wasn’t part of that. It’s not like she was cosplaying Lolita or saying she looks like Nina. Come on now folks

no matter what we wear, our appearance is policed. it’s the never-ending moving of the goal post… of people who have no business telling a woman what to wear or how to act.

I see her point and respect it, but don’t agree. She isn’t choosing to wear a babydoll dress… she’s choosing to wear a very revealing and is inevitably perceived as trying to be sexy, because that is usually what is expected from pop or mainstream artists when they wear revealing outfits.

Preach! Its absurd that people are trying to link inherently feminine attire with pdfs. We find more ways to blame women for pedophilia than the actual sickos that are pedos.

And don’t get started on the fact that this backlash is happening at the same time that an actual pdfs michael jackson is getting lauded and his history rewritten

Yes, yes, yes. It’s always girls and women that are chastised about how they dress because of what men will think about them. And in some cases, it’s a particular family member that’s coming over and girls/women are told to cover up. Like…?

Ngl, I initially was put off by it because of the specific bloomers they put her in, but I get her point. The dress itself is just PJs to me? I don’t understand that.

The bloomers are just unflattering and looked like a diaper to me on both the babydolls she wore. I’m saying that as someone who wears babydolls. She deserves better bloomers! I have tried on ones with the frills and it was immediately “no.” Those only work on kids, haha.

The other set had this weird white lace that I actually thought someone had done AI of her wearing a diaper at first and was horrified… then realized it was just the lace, lol.

The fact people sexualize babydolls is wild. Like, it’s lingerie, but they are also pajamas. A style can be two at once and neither have to be infantalizing.

I just think that style of dress is ugly. But if she wants to wear it, let her wear that ugly ass dress. It shouldn’t be a problem to anyone.

I do think it’s funny that it’s literally called a babydoll dress. Harder to argue that it’s not meant to look childlike when it’s in the name.

But I think she addressed it well. She’s a very good speaker.

    16. Kind of wild the NYT got her on the record talking about this. It’s obviously an unedited video rather than a profile or interview, so there’s less of a chance for the journalists to reframe or decontextualize her words in a way she’s likely to be unhappy with, but for a long time it seemed like the norm was artists of this size avoiding interviews altogether unless they totally avoided controversial topics. An artist of Olivia’s stature addressing a hot button topic for the first time in an interview with actual critics/reporters feels like a major shift.
