Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, starring Varun Dhawan, Pooja Hegde, and Mrunal Thakur, collected Rs. 7.50 crore nett on its opening day. That’s an ordinary start to say so, as these collections came with discount offers. The comedy drama should aim to grow on Saturday and Sunday.

Touted to be the final film of celebrated film director David Dhawan, the movie is expected to close its first weekend around the Rs. 20 crore nett mark. The movie has garnered mixed reactions from the audience so far. It will be interesting to see whether the movie can hold well on weekdays and work in the long run.

Varun Dhawan’s previous film, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, netted over Rs. 60 crore in India in its full run. Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai should aim to surpass it and end up on a better note.

The rom-com genre and mid-scale films are struggling in the post-pandemic times in general. One of the prime reasons is the erosion of the theatrical base by digital platforms. The current 8-week OTT window is directly undermining the theatrical business, conditioning audiences to simply wait for the streaming release. The makers need time to elongate the window to somewhere around 6 months and make the wait inconvenient for the audience. Otherwise, the genre is already suffering.
