For Pride Month, it's a good time to talk about our favorite LGBT couples on tv and movies (representation is important!). What are your favorites?
A few of mine:
-
Brokeback Mountain – a heartbreaking love story between two repressed men. I will always be salty that Heath Ledger didn't win Best Actor and this didn't win Best Picture.
-
Rope – Alfred Hitchcock's film starred two gay actors (John Dall and Farley Granger) in a gay relationship. Only Hitch could have gotten away with this in 1948.
-
Rebel Without a Cause – James Dean and Sal Mineo. There is a strong homoerotic subtext between Jim and Plato.
-
Farewell My Concubine – two dan in Chinese opera have a lifelong bond. Starring Leslie Cheung and Zhang Fenyi. Watch this film. It's incredible.
-
Heavenly Creatures – Kate Winslet's breakout, about two teens who fall in love and commit murder.
-
Rent – Jonathan Larson's musical had queer representation in Angel and Collins AND Maureen and Joanne.
-
Talented Mr. Ripley – a strong homoerotic subtext. The best work Matt Damon and Jude Law ever did, hands down.
-
Moonlight – a black queer romance was a critically acclaimed success in 2016. It won Best Picture. Brokeback walked so Moonlight could run.
-
The Favourite – a love triangle between Queen Anne and her two ladies in waiting. Excellent costume drama, and Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone is magnificent.
-
Succession – Tom and Greg count and you cannot convince me otherwise. Tom would castrate Greg and marry him in a heartbeat.
-
Queen Charlotte – Brimsley and Reynolds almost stole the show from the leads with their sweet, touching love story.
-
Heartstopper – adorable gay romance between two rugby players in a British boarding school.
-
Fellow Travelers – omg. The chemistry between Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey is amazing. Incredible series.
-
The Pitt – the romance between Garcia and Santos is the rare romance in this rather clinical show.
-
Ponies – Twila and Ivanna have a Cold War, cloaks-and-daggers romance. Love them and everyone should watch Ponies!
-
Heated Rivalry – come on, you knew I had to. Ilya and Shane have a secret romance while being rivals in hockey. Epic chemistry between the leads, , this series is amazing.
-
Severance – Severance is wrongly promoted. It's promoted as this weird sci-fi series, but it's really a love story. Burt and Irving are exhibit A.

my favorite letterboxd review of the children’s hour (1961) was asking if it’s possible to give children the death penalty

I know us Buffy fans are grieving rn, but Willow and Tara for sure.

They literally rode off into the sunset together, wanting nothing more than to be with the love of their loves. They were canon. ❤️
