FIFA reverses World Cup water bottle ban after backlash: “All fans will be permitted to bring in 1, soft, plastic, 20 oz (590ml), factory sealed disposable water bottle into any FIFA World Cup 2026 match in the USA & Canada.” But, “fans will not be permitted to bring in hard sided, reusable bottles”

    1. Won’t someone think of the poor FIFA executives and the money *they’ll* lose if they couldn’t charge exorbitant prices for water in the middle of June heat?

    2. Why have water when you can have a refreshing Coca-Cola or Sprite for 16 times more than the recommended retail price?!

Ticket prices are already out of reach for the average fan. This stupid rule is just a cherry on top 🤦🏼‍♂️

“Bring bottles that are bad for the environment!” Isn’t the win FIFA thinks it is

20 ounces of water? That’s it? Are they going to be providing free water to the folks sweating in the sun?

Listen I love shitting on FIFA and I love shitting on event venues especially on prices within them.

However, I do actually believe that this ban was to protect the players. In general people do insane shit for their sports teams but FIFA being a literal global force has seen everything under the sun – we have seen players get pelted with food and beverage containers that get sold in the arena during games!

However, I wonder if post ban someone finally pointed out / someone finally realized that banning water bottles from coming in doesn’t stop the water bottles you can get in stadium. What is interesting to me is that you can only bring in “unopened” water bottles which for all the stadiums I have been to (WNBA season ticket holder, travel for a few college basketball games a year, go to a lot of concerts etc) is that the normal rule is an oz limit and no glass (sometimes they also care about the cap/top of the bottle itself) but empty.

When it comes to interfacing with the public as someone who once worked in QA in tech on new public facing products (that would not be individually owned) I got told to test “like I’ve never seen technology before and if I ever had the thought no normal person would do this, you’re not necessarily testing for the normal person, you are testing for the worst interaction you can imagine – and someone will inevitably come along shortly after launch and prove to us that people are dumber than you think”. So I would also apply this to sporting events especially something like the FIFA world cup where there is nationalism also on the table…

Somebody who spends $1k+ on tickets and lodging for one stretch of five hours is allowed to bring in (1) 89¢ water bottle

Water is one of the most essential requirements for life and should be available to anyone, anywhere, for free. It is shameful that we monetized water.

Thank god. Someone could have died without access to water. It’s so dangerous

June in Monterrey can reach 100 degrees – and we have no trees and no breeze. Why do they want to actually see people die?
