Emilia Clarke’s impressive career has seen her starring as a number of beloved characters, including Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones. But while portraying the Mother of Dragons landed her several awards (and even more nominations), not all of her roles were so well received.

Among her less popular projects are Terminator Genisys, Marvel’s Secret Invasion and Solo: A Star Wars Story, which each faced critical backlash following their releases.

In a recent interview with Variety, the actor confirmed that she is aware of the negative response, but that she doesn’t take it to heart.

Speaking about 2023’s Secret Invasion, which saw her playing Skrull rebel G’iah, Clarke openly admitted: “I don’t think no one liked that show, guys. I’m sorry!”

“Star Wars? They didn’t like it. Terminator? That should never have happened. But these were jobs I said yes to, you know what I mean?” she continued.

When asked if the frosty receptions were disappointing, Clarke gave a rational answer, pointing out that she had “entered into already existing franchises”.

“So when they don’t work out, it’s not personal,” she added.

The star went on to explain her mission to redefine what success means to her, after feeling “significant” disappointment when she didn’t win an Emmy for Game of Thrones.

She shared that she now takes on roles “for no other reason than that I would enjoy that job”, adding: “My connection to a project ends when they say, ‘Picture wrap.’ Because it’s not for me to decide what people will think of it.”
