“someone whose breakout lead role was a $70m budget film that flopped; they were driving Lyft two years later” Any thoughts on who?

People really have no idea and choose to focus on small stars making it and not big artists like Taylor Swift polluting the Earth with 13 versions of an album and 30 minute private jet flights

getting paid 20k and then having to spend it all on looking like you got paid more than 20k is the most hollywood thing i’ve ever heard

That freaking sucks. I wonder if there’s any way to make these events work without paying money out of pocket. Like she can do her own hair/makeup and show up in her own clothes as a fuck you to Focus Films, but I understand that doesn’t help her image and she’s also trying to market herself for future projects. But on that point, I guess the fact that the contract only covers partial PR and partial HMU from a business perspective makes sense though, they cover a portion because she’s promoting their film and bringing in audience, but also, this is growing her own celebrity as well, and it’s her marketing herself and growing her own brand, so I guess a portion of HMU and PR is technically a personal expense of the actor?
Now that the movie has done so well I’d hope there was opportunity to renegotiate some of those terms so more expenses are covered.

Inde for sure will be booked and busy (if not already), and she should strike while the iron is hot!
Being Uber/Lyft driver even after a hit show/movie does happen. A few years ago, Toronto was abuzz when someone posted on IG that they got Shane Kippel (Spinner) from “Degrassi” fame as their Uber driver

Anybody thinks she will become a star. Does she actually have star power Or is she just a product of a good movie

The movie has made over 200 million dollars so far. They didn’t pay her enough.
I hope she gets 20k a WEEK on her next film just to spite anyone trying to be snarky about her pay.
Edited to add: Im aware it was an indie film with a small budget and that’s why they didn’t make it rain on their actors.
My comment wasn’t made out of ignorance of small film budgets. I just meant she deserved everything she got and more because clearly she was more than worth every cent of that 20k. That’s all.

Regardless of if there’s any bonus structure attached to the above the lines / anyone that has been involved in marketing this film, the reality is if her agents are smart then Inde is going to reap the rewards for her performance, new social media success and marketing commitment for years to come. She’ll jump a bunch of rungs in the actress hierarchy ladder, and get offered some high paying opportunities that she likely wouldn’t have even been considered for at all before this.
You often make your $$$ in Hollywood on the follow ups to your successful project, not the first thing to get your name/brand out there.

I guess I don’t really see the controversy here. Like yeah the arts are famously not super lucrative for most people. Vast majority of people would love to make $20k for one month of work doing something they’re passionate about. Is anyone forcing her to have a glam team or whatever for these engagements? Is she contractually obligated to wear designer?

Respectfully… So? I want everyone to get paid more lol but 20k is nearly 6 months of salary for shit tons of people, some of whom work at companies that are raking in a lot more than the budget for this film. Okay, she’s not rich. Welcome to the club lmao. Also…there was no possible way for her to spend less than like…6k per event? Thats more than most people spend getting ready for their weddings. Rent a dress do your own makeup. The comment is tone deaf and not an example of people in the arts being hard done by lmao.

Has anyone ever heard of a studio retroactively paying an actor of a breakout hit a bonus when the movie explodes? Logistically might be complicated…if you pay one person a bonus you have to pay everyone at least something as everyone contributed…but that seems like a respectful thing to do to support smaller artists, professionals, actors in this position and a way to show appreciation to everyone who was part of making it happen!

I really relate to this sentiment, even as an artist with a relatively low profile. Being successful comes with its own costs if you want to sustain that success and turn it into something lasting, which can be especially challenging for people without steady family support (or at least some income from elsewhere).
In my experience, it’s especially punishing to come away from a successful project that gains you exposure with the need to then present a certain image that you cannot actually financially afford

We need to start subsidizing artists like they do in Europe. I would love if my taxes contributed a little bit to that.
