Alan Cumming has officially been confirmed to reprise his role in the sequel to the ’90s comedy “masterpiece” Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion. Back in January 2025, it was reported that Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino were in final talks to reprise their roles from the iconic 1997 movie.

Directed by Tim Federle, production is already under way on the sequel, with shooting beginning last week on Friday 5 June.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cumming is officially reprising his role as Sandy Frink from the first film, an unpopular boy turned billionaire who made his fortune by inventing a special type of rubber and who is secretly in love with Kudrow’s Michele.

Reprising their roles from the original alongside Cumming are Janeane Garofalo as Heather, Camryn Manheim as Toby and Julia Campbell as Christie.

Newcomers to the cast include Keegan-Michael Key, Breckin Meyer, Rob Huebel, Patrick Warburton and Nathan Lee Graham, though their exact roles and the film’s plot are being kept under wraps.

The anticipated sequel won’t be released in cinemas, however, and will go straight to streaming, where it will be exclusively available as a Hulu Original or on Disney+ globally.

Officially announcing that production had begun on the sequel, 20th Century Studios shared an image on Instagram of Kudrow and Sorvino, sitting in director’s chairs, holding hands and wearing colourful costumes typical of their iconic characters.

They captioned the post: “The reunion you’ve been waiting for! The Romy and Michele sequel is now in production.”

Sorvino took to the comment section to share her thoughts on the sequel, writing: “It’s finally happening. Bursting with joy to be ‘reunited!'”

Marking the film’s 20th anniversary in 2017, Digital Spy described it as “a groundbreaking feminist masterpiece”.

We concluded: “Actually, Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion is a subversive feminist masterpiece, a movie which honours but transcends its genre and is easily as meta, intelligent and groundbreaking as Scream was in the horror genre one year earlier.”
