    1. This has been such an interesting saga. The fact that the trademark application even went through for such a generic/well used phrase is wild.

I fear she’s damaged her brand beyond repair at this point.

    2. This has been a wild ride, and I cannot believe she thought she would get away with this to begin with. Delusional

    3. I’m really curious what this business strategy she mentioned was about, if it was not to stop other people to use the phrase

I could google it (but I’d rather hear from the community lol), but can anyone fill me in on the tea? Who is this person and what’s the story (sorry all the comments seem to be well-informed on the situation and I’m just coming into it lol)

She’s only sorry because of the backlash. Girlie filed a trademark.. she had to have done some research into it first. Wild to sit there and say it was to protect her brand, when her brand was the most plain and unoriginal use of the “hot girls read” movement.

This whole thing was such a mess but I will say, PR wise, this is a solid apology. I don’t know if her brand will survive (I’m honestly shocked people were willing to spend that kind of money on bookmarks- and pay shipping for them- when they come free from most small book stores) but this is how most people should respond when faced with a similar situation.

Super niche reference, but if you get it you get 10 points. Imagine if book tok had been around when #cockygate happened.

    8. Sometimes I am reminded there are entire nations of internet content and drama I live my life completely unaware of. This is one of those times. Between things like this and Bricks and Minifigs, it’s become a weird sensation where it feels like I just got back from an overseas trip while somehow never having left my house.

I thought trademarks were to protect new and creative ideas. What is so new and creative about ‘hot girls read.’ I think I lost the plot, sorry guys 😔

Girl is a writer? Then she should know the difference between automatic and immediate.

I have no idea who this is so I went to her page to see her merch and it ain’t even cute.

She keeps referring to her “business” and while I do know that people monetize the content they create for BookTok if possible, it seems a bit… like, idk I’m not on BookTok at all but I’d rather think it’s just people reviewing books they like? I know that’s very naive of me, but my point is that her emphasizing it’s a business is probably making parts of this worse.

I am so sick of influencers acting so out of pocket.

I’m struggling to find the right word, but these influencers are so deluded and need to be reminded that going viral something on the internet isn’t the real world.

    14. I’ve never heard of this woman before this, but she seems…. horrible? Like, oh my god, so sorry bestie, but immediately cease from using this phrase or like, with peace and love, you’ll be hearing from my lawyers!

when will people in the book world learn not to try & trademark common phrases &/or words?? sigh

    16. Anyone remembers when the Fine Bros. attempted to trademark REACTS on YouTube? Where ever they are now, Allie Rose will most likely follow.

    17. idontseethelightatal on

This reminds me of when those YouTube guys were trying to trademark “react”

    18. This has been insane to watch play out, as an author who has been a part of this overall community for almost twenty years. If she’d been around for #cockygate she could have seen exactly how this would end lol

    19. just_reading_along1 on

She burned bridges with the whole community for nothing. Should have thought about that. Yeesh.

    20. She needs to stop lying about someone else sending out cease and desists, no one’s out here defending her trademark for free 🤣
