Every time the camera sweeps down to show the celebrities sitting courtside at this year’s NBA Finals, eagle-eyed viewers may notice that Ben Stiller has his phone in hand, landscape mode. Is he texting using the wide-set version of the keyboard? Please. Ben Stiller is obviously cooler than that. No, he’s simply filming his own footage, sometimes put through a lovely black-and-white filter, as he did with the final moments of game four between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs. It’s a complete and total explosion: the screaming, the crying, the jumping, the Mariska Hargitay running to hug Jalen Brunson. It’s not just an iPhone video for social media. Stiller might actually be putting together something bigger.

In a conversation with Kenny Smith on ESPN’s NBA Tip-Off, Stiller said that “there’s a project in the work” but also that he’d be doing it anyway. (“He might not wanna announce that yet!” Shaq intervened, saving Stiller from having to divulge his industry secrets.) “It’s part of a bigger project,” he alluded. Stiller did not respond to a request for comment, but many believe this project is a larger documentary about the 2025–26 Knicks season for HBO. Though maybe he’s just putting it all together for one giant, long video to attach in a tweet for everyone to enjoy at the end of the season. Or he’s auditioning to be Taylor Swift’s wedding videographer.
