With the Shrek 5 teaser dropping yesterday, some Mike Myers fans might’ve missed the news that another of the star’s iconic characters is also coming back to our screens. The actor has confirmed that his international man of mystery, Austin Powers, and his arch-nemesis Dr Evil are returning for a sequel after the cast of the spoof spy trilogy reprised their roles in an ad.

The cast of the trilogy reunited for telecommunication giant Verizon, with Myers’ Dr Evil gathering his associates, played by Rob Lowe, Seth Green and Mindy Sterling, to launch “Menace Mobile”, which will feature “the most confusing pricing plans of all time”. The short is part of a Verizon campaign called “Simplicity Plan”.

The reunion ignited nostalgia for the raucous franchise as Myers was asked whether he would return as Austin and Dr Evil. Quizzed on Trevor Noah’s World Cup Watch Party, Myers simply responded “yes” as to whether there will be an Austin Powers 4. The actor did not elaborate further.

This could mean that the first Austin Powers film in 24 years might be on its way, though details on when and how a follow-up would materialise are currently scarce.

Myers had often expressed interest in rocking Austin Powers’ 1970s flared velvet suit one more time, but there’s never been an official confirmation that a project was under way — until now.

Directed by Jay Roach and written by Myers, who co-wrote the second and third film with Michael McCullers, the Austin Powers trilogy is a vibrant, satirical take on spy stories that takes themselves a little too seriously, with James Bond being the main target of the franchise.

Myers previously addressed the possibility of a fourth movie following 2002’s Goldmember in a cryptic answer.

“I would love to do one,” he said of a fourth chapter in 2022. “I can neither confirm nor deny the existence or non-existence of such a project should it exist or not exist.”

“You know, we’re… you know,” Myers added, before suggesting he’d just provided a “non-confirmed confirmation” of a fourth film.
