I thought the backlash was because of the cheating.

Wasn’t the anger because she was still married to Jason Sudekis at the time? The perception was that she was blowing her family up for Styles. Florence Pugh was very unhappy with Wilde and the timeline of her relationship with Styles. One of the reasons Don’t Worry Darling was a trainwreck.
I don’t think people really care that much about her being older. No one cares that Jessica Alba is dating a guy 12 years younger when she separated from her husband. Most people are like good for him.
This feels like some great spin.

Alex’s framing of the question seems to miss that Olivia wasn’t just in a position of power as in she was a powerful person, but she was in a position of power over Harry and his work place. The rumor was that it affected the work environment for everyone on set.
Also in this interview Olivia says she knew her relationship with Jason was over in March 2020, months before Harry was cast, which is interesting that she gives so much more detail. I don’t think you can talk about the backlash without looking at the fact that she and Jason still looked like a couple to the outside world until much later. Some of the outrage came from the belief she cheated.
All that said, I appreciate that she said she and Jason are great co-parents. All other mess aside, good for them for putting differences aside to do their best for the kids.

olivia has said her relationship with jason was over months before it was announced. jason has never corrected that, iirc the only thing he said was that he didn’t understand why they split. and it was only the nanny that said they were still living together and jason was trying to win her back, until olivia put an end to it in late 2020. tbh none of that contradicts for me? it was covid, a lot of separated couples stayed physically together during that time, especially if they had kids. hell, ben stiller and christine taylor bubbled together for their kids and ended up calling off their divorce because of it. clearly olivia was out. so i don’t know why people are so certain olivia just decided on a whim to leave jason for harry. and jason moved on pretty quickly with keeley hazell – who he had known for years and wrote a specific part for on ted lasso.

All these comments are just sort of proving the point that women are judged much more harshly than men. Everyone trying to justify the extreme reactions instead of acknowledging how disproportionate they were.
First of all, you all are assuming there was cheating, when she herself is claiming that there wasn’t, so where is that coming from?
Second, male directors have been having flings with their female stars ever since the beginning of movie making. If people want to have a discussion about how directors shouldn’t be having flings with their stars and how it’s unprofessional, that’s fair, but you cannot deny that even in the current climate, it’s mostly hand waved away when the director is a man and the star is a woman. People may talk about it in negative terms, but a male director will never receive the absolute vitriol that she did. Can we at least acknowledge that?

This situation always pissed me off so much. Divorces are messy. Yes, Olivia was being a messy, imperfect person. But a movie came out at the exact same time as hers (Amsterdam) that was directed by an actual serial abuser and admitted sexual predator. Yet she got 100x the hate at the time. The rumors about what she might have done were somehow made to be astronomically worse than what the male director actually admitted to doing. Thatās the world we live in.

Sorta shocked by comments here. Women do get judged SO harshly if they date significantly younger men. How many times does a 39/40 year old man date a 25 year old girl and no one bats an eye. But in reverse, itās how dareeee she!!! Iāve never understood the double standard and misogyny. People were incredibly mean to her then. Donāt Worry Darling was a good movie. She marketed it poorly, but I think she did a solid job. Not one person gave her credit for it or that movie any positive press.
How many super old dudes do we see dating women in their 20s and nobody really bats an eye? Again, I donāt get it. Her ex husband also ran a nasty PR campaign against her behind the scenes.

I always just wanted to know why Florence Pugh hated her lol I remember her and Harry were going out during covid that pissed ppl off too. That being said I would hate to date Harry Styles, he has a fanbase that will hate any woman he dates AND on top of that he won’t speak a word to defend you. He doesnt have to come out and call some of them losers, but he could at least be more intentional in his relationships rather than living in the ambiguity that his fans look for to shit on the women. Like post her on you IG or share a story, anything that says “hey this is my gf, deal with it”

I feel like culturally we have a vacuum from the absence of Barbra Walters and Wendy Williams. For as problematic as they were, celebrities are too in control of their own narratives lately in ways that are kind of pmo ā getting to go on these soft podcast press tours with Jake Shane and CHD where they basically have scripted fluff interviews designed to astroturf authenticity bothers me.
This is the smallest potatoes, but I also feel this way in the political sense now too, where weāre losing the important adversarial role of press and journalism
