While promoting this weekend’s premiere of House of the Dragon Season 3, Matt Smith chatted a bit with the TODAY Show about next year’s Star Wars: Starfighter. The actor played coy about his role in the film while praising the project overall. He also provided a small update on Starfighter‘s post-production status.

According to prior reports, Smith will play a villain in Starfighter alongside Mia Goth, who will hunt down Ryan Gosling and Flynn Gray’s characters. However, Smith doesn’t confirm his villainous status, simply saying “maybe. Am I?” when asked. As the saying goes, no villain is a villain in their eyes. He goes on to hype up the film, saying:

“I think the film is going to be absolutely blinding. I think it’s going to be brilliant, truly. I was so, so excited and thrilled to be on it. Mia Goth, fantastic. Ryan [Gosling] is just a great leader. Shawn [Levy] is a real top, top director. It was brilliant.”

Principal photography on Starfighter was completed late last year. While post-production is still nowhere near finished, Smith says he may get a chance to see a rough cut of the film soon.

“I might even go and watch it today. Can you believe that? There’s like a rough cut, you know, kind of rough, rough.”

With ongoing visual effects work and potential reshoots on the calendar, Starfighter isn’t likely to come fully together until next year, as is the case with almost every big-budget production. But it’s good to know that progress is steady and everything remains on track. You can check out Smith’s full interview below.

There hasn’t been an actor or actress on the Starfighter cast who hasn’t waxed poetic about their experience on the film. Amy Adams was recently on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, calling it “a dream come true.” Adams apparently collected Star Wars toys growing up, including a Princess Leia doll she still has.

Star Wars: Starfighter is directed by Shawn Levy and stars Ryan Gosling, Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Amy Adams, Aaron Pierre, Daniel Ings, Jamael Westman, and Simon Bird. The film will be released on May 28, 2027.

Nate uses his love for Star Wars and movies as a way to cope with the pain of being a Minnesota sports fan. When he’s not at the theater, you can usually find Nate reading or pretending he isn’t washed at video games.
