    1. it shocks me that you’re someone that analyzes songs because you frequently misunderstand nuanced lyrics, especially from female artists.

    2. Olivia genuinely just keeps getting better and better. It's such a wonderful feeling watching a singer-songwriter realize their potential more and more as the years go by.

    3. I agree with most of the points made in the review, especially about the amazing teamwork between Oliva and her producer, Dan Nigro, and the enhanced emotional vocals and lush production of this album. Also, as always, Olivia's consistent self-awareness of her own insecurities working against her is present very early in the record. On "stupid song," Olivia sings: "They say that honest love is a cage that makes you feel free." I think this line serves as a kind of thesis statement that becomes increasingly more relevant throughout the album, particularly in the second half. The concept of "love is a cage" is painfully ironic because the feeling of being free is not real, and, therefore, it's unsustainable. As Olivia becomes more critical of the relationship, disillusionment begins, in the forms of longing, confusion, unfulfilled expectations, isolation, and, ultimately, the desire to escape. Olivia directly pinpoints these stages as they occur and pulls the listener into cinematic diary. A phenomenal album!

    4. Thanks for this glowing, honest review of a critically-acclaimed, well-loved album. But please change your rating to a 9, since you mentioned that it is a light 9. The closer it gets to 10, the more love and exposure this album will get. Thank you!

    5. I think you glossed over or even misunderstood the hidden complexities of purple. It absolutely could not be taken out of the album, it is the quintessential piece that leads to side 2, creating the uncertain atmosphere needed for The Cure to thrive. Its cold synth lines and sweet lyrics contrast to create something confused of its own identity, shifting the album from red desire to blue sadness as Olivia Rodrigo confesses she’s given everything for the idea of this relationship. The dissonance each time she says ‘purple’ slowly allows you to question what the song really is, until you’re thrusted into the next song where Olivia’s confession and realizations come out

    6. In terms of raw songwriting i don't think this album quite reaches the peak of the last (driver's license and especially vampire) but i can agree that as a full product it's very strong. It's her most cohesive album, even though song by song I think it's not a step up. I'd give it a 7 to 8, still good!

    7. An honest 10 for me, because I appreciate her lyrics and heartbreak journalism. She is willing to show the ugly parts. I am reminded of some of the highlights of Alanis' catalog

    8. Olivia Rodrigo's thing is to write a song where the last line of the song or chorus or refrain undercuts the message or gives the actual meaning of the phrase ironically. Like "I might just drop dead." Given that, the music is always going to highlight the turn of phrase. I am still hopeful that Rodrigo will find a way to raise pop music to something higher. She seems to be growing.
