sheās completely valid for this! itās one thing to dislike the album, but the actual way he spoke about her and her art was literally disgusting. i donāt know how you can speak about someone dealing with such a serious illness that way, truly indefensible and clearly rooted in sexism

I never understood his main character criticism, even with the full context. The whole point of an album is to make it about you lol.
I always did think it was odd to say someone has main character energy in an album that is literally about their experiences
Like are we going to accuse Roger Waters of main character energy for The Wall

LOL. I don’t hate Fantano (just think he’s incredibly dumb), but he absolutely had this coming.
This review was the point where I couldn’t take him seriously anymore, and it has nothing to do with whether he liked the album or not, it’s just a terrible tone deaf review where he very clearly didn’t even bother looking into the album and dissecting it as a body of work (cus if he did he’d know it was about her illness). A reviewer has one job and if he can’t even do that, what’s the point? It’s probably why he never addressed the backlash and hoped it’d just blow over. He was too embarrassed.

Itās still disgraceful that Fantano said that Halsey had āmain character syndromeā in his review. Iāve never forgiven him for it, heās a major asshole for saying it.
Like, motherfucker, she wrote those songs believing that she was actively dying. The Great Impersonator couldāve been her equivalent of Blackstar.
retrofuturisms on
Even though I wasn’t the biggest fan of this album, it feels strange to critique an artist about “having main character syndrome” when they are singing about their own personal experience. This album was made to tell her story after being diagnosed with life-changing illnesses, like how else can she talk about it if not in 1st person?
Edit: changed wording on last sentence

That review was genuinely insane. Good for her that she defends herself. Normally I feel like criticism can be good and should always be given in regards to music but if the critic boils down to āshe acts like she is the main characterā about her own album in which she sings about her time in chemo I do have to question your credibility

An album is just about the most personal thing you can create. Especially as a solo artist.
This is like reading Harry Potter and then saying Harry Potter has main character syndrome.
Thatās how main characters work.
(Honestly actually probably an autobiography would be even more suiting but I canāt think of a good example right now.)

This review made me so mad when this album came out. I love multiple songs on the album and for him to act like sheās being dramatic about songs on an album quite literally conceived while she was undergoing chemo is unreal. The album is very honest and vulnerable and not as dramatic as he acts with the context of her literally facing her mortality. If you havenāt listened recommend panic attack, the end and hurt feelings

Itās such terrible criticism for an album too. You donāt have to feel bad for someone because theyāre undergoing cancer treatment but that person is allowed to feel bad for themselves.
You can dislike the music without attacking the artist for talking about going through chemo. What a stupid take.

good on her. the comment about main character syndrome is still so distasteful, imo. illness changes youā not only physically but mentally and emotionally. it brings on guilt and fear. youāre not some whiny crybaby for thinking of yourself when YOU are sick. and fwiw sheās been public about her fears of what her dying would do to her young child
whichwitch9 on
Im on her side solely because it’s legitimately a great album and great concept. Just because someone of the songs are heavy doesn’t mean they’re not good- quite the opposite. They were designed to make people think and succeed.
Add in the layer of the artist tie ins, and it was fantastic. The three “Letter to God” songs are an amazing progression, with interesting artists that say a lot- Cher, Springsteen, then Aaliyah. Listening to those three songs back to back is honestly something Id recommend to anyone. The progression of emotions combined with how well she draws in the inspirations is my favorite thing about the album.
It’s so clear her record label didn’t know what to do with this album. She did half the promotions herself. Even the songs that had good sounds for singles weren’t released as singles

Heās kind of the definition of ācan dish it out but canāt take it.ā He acts like heās a legitimate music critic but half the time doesnāt actually take the time to pretend to discover what the lyrics even mean in favor of getting a review up as fast as humanly possible. And then runs around beefing with stan twitter like a baby. Not to mention his less than ideal history with racial and homophobic slurs.
Halsey was nice enough not to get his ass before now. Heās a thin skinned internet bully and Iām tired of people treating his opinion like gold because heās hypercritical of most music that appeals to women.

I used to be so tuned into his channel but actually I can’t with him anymore. When it comes to accusations against him (racism, alt-right etc) he comes out with these long video responses carefully breaking it down. But when it actually affects other people (this, the betterhelp thing to name a few) it’s stupid twitter drama and acting like a spoilt baby.
He’s also acting like a feminist, like he’s so morally upstanding in all his content yet he’s accusing a writer on her own album of having main character syndrome for writing about her cancer experience.
He’s so low. So pathetic at times. All of his twitter and Insta posts he’s talking like “queen” and “camp” and whatever bs but he’s old and sad at times. You’d think after all his internet experience he’d learn to apologise when it really matters.
