> “I think the biggest reason is that she never had a core fanbase,” one former senior label executive who requested anonymity tells Rolling Stone. “She was a very song-driven, radio-hits-driven artist who lacked a core fanbase, and that’s what you need today for career longevity.” Lizzo considered this perspective herself. Earlier this month, she credited perceived changes in the primary consumption model of music for limiting her audience. “The industry changed so much in the last 3 yrs. streaming replaced radio & I was a radio darling,” she wrote on X. “That’s how my fans discovered my music.”

Idk her arrogance after the allegations and lawsuits was very off putting to me

Her hits were during the peak of self love/body positivty movement (which seems to be going the opposite direction these days) and people didn’t know what they know now that her character isn’t great, and the new music is just bad and dated.

Dumb question but do most people still buy albums? I pretty much solely stream on Spotify…

What a turn. I loved Lizzo. Now I couldn’t even bring myself to care about her. There’s no hate, just indifference

Doesn’t help the lawsuits and things that came out – whether real or fake – damaged her credibility.

The allegations and she had fair weather fans. Her music was also kinda corny idk

Idk there’s probably a lot of factors but there’s also a lot to said for just the quality of the music. Special and My Face Hurts weren’t very good and the singles for this one were dated and weird.
I think at one point she did have a real fanbase but when you haven’t put out a bop in years even loyal fans are going to start losing interest

I’m not mad about this, but I am honestly surprised. For all the bemoaning about “cancel culture”, it feels like it often doesn’t actually have much of an effect on people’s careers. I guess it’s nice here to see someone actually face career consequences for their shameful actions?

Her arrogance about the sexual assault allegations along with self love went out of fashion. She may have lost the weight but her sound is still corny.

When you make your money on marketing and promoting your larger body, why would it be a surprise that you lose that chunk of people by becoming smaller?
I personally don’t care if people want to become larger or smaller or how they do it. But in a space as vapid and image obsessed as Hollywood, of course it comes into play.
I don’t agree but I can absolutely understand why someone within the body positivity movement may find Ozempic incongruent.

Blaming this on the algorithm is wild. She did this to herself. You can’t build your entire image on self-love and positivity and then get abusive with your employees. Men have gone further in her industry and done much more horrible things but the reality is the gp is much less forgiving of women and woc in particular. Also NDAs only go so far 🤷♀️

Lizzo got in the way of Lizzo. Also misogyny and I remind myself that before falling for the hype against her.
Like I get the scandals, the personality etc and a lot of it is fair. The criticism about making brand about body will cause you to lose your fanbase when your body changes (see Meghan Trainor).
People disliked her public antics that were vulgar. She was discriminatory to her backup dancers.
All valid however, we as a society punish women in bigger bodies for commiting less crimes than more desirable people. Chris Brown prime example. I know people might think we don’t platform Sexxyred but they do and she gets more hype and traction than Lizzo while acting like a complete degen in 4k.
If Lizzo behaved like Ice Spice they’d call her disgusting.

A big part of her appeal was being joyful and kind- which means as soon as she turned out to be mean and shitty, no one cared about her

I think her music was for a moment and that moment is over (see also: Katy Perry). Add the fact that her branding was big and beautiful and not only did she push it aside, but that moment is ALSO over. And then she was called out for mistreating people, which no one likes, but especially not from big black women. And finally, this album had literally the worst promotion ever. I mean, did it even have any? It just caused a cascade of disinterest.

I feel some people have forgotten that sometimes celebrities fade from popularity and that’s okay lol. Like there’s so many one hit wonders or artists who had a handful of hits but never managed to maintain that success long-term. Obviously there’s a lot of reasons Lizzo specifically wasn’t able to maintain that momentum but I feel like she’s an example of one of those celebs we kinda have to just let fade out lol

I saw no buzz or promotion for the heck never even saw the cover… where is her team?!

Lizzo’s music always sounded like what you’d hear playing in the background as you were sorting through the discount rack at a JCPenney.
In addition to that, her whole girl-boss-body-positivity image is very 2010s, so it’s not only her sound but her overall image that feels outdated from a marketing perspective.
And then pissing off her whole fan base with the employee harassment lawsuit likely didn’t help either.
Most pop musicians have a short shelf life. It’s not surprising that she was a 2 hit wonder.
