Swifties around the world are counting down the days until Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce say “I do,” hoping the Grammy-winning singer will finally get her happy ending. However, many members of the public are looking forward to the wedding for a very different reason—they want the looming disruptions to daily city life to end.
According to Hollywood insider Rob Shuter, Swift’s wedding is facing new major backlash due to possibly street closures around the venue, Madison Square Garden. The pop star and Kansas City Chiefs player are rumored to be getting married at New York City’s iconic arena over the 4th of July weekend.

On June 24, Page Six reported that City Hall confirmed that a permit application had been filed with the city’s Street Activity Permit Office for July 2 to July 4. The application, submitted by Winick Productions, requests street closures around MSG, along with plans for a public tent set up outside the arena to accommodate between 500 and 999 guests.
If roads around MSG are closed for the multi-day event, it could cause quite the uproar. “New Yorkers already spend enough time sitting in traffic,” a source told Shuter’s Naughty But Nice. “The reaction is, ‘Isn’t Madison Square Garden big enough? Now you need the streets too?’”
Another added, “People are trying to get home from work, catch trains, or leave the city for the July Fourth weekend. Nobody wants to hear that their commute could be disrupted because two very rich people are throwing a wedding.”

Swift and Kelce’s wedding is also drawing unflattering comparisons to Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos’ three-day wedding extravaganza in Venice in June 2025, with critics seeing another example of billionaire-scale excess playing out in yet another historic city.
“After Venice, you’d think celebrities would understand that people don’t like feeling their city has been turned into a private party,” a separate insider said. “That’s exactly what this risks looking like.”
Even longtime fans of the “Love Story” singer are now reportedly questioning her judgment and exactly what is driving these decisions. “Taylor’s gift has always been knowing how ordinary people think,” a Swiftie remarked. “This feels different. The mood is, ‘Why should my day be harder because of a pop star and a football player?‘“
As for whether the security decisions—including permits to shut down streets—actually came from the famous couple, almost no one seems to care. As one source explained, “People don’t care who filed the permits. They see street closures, traffic delays, and a celebrity wedding. To them, it feels rude—and that’s becoming the story.”
