“The boost will be used to pay for a backlog in maintenance at occupied royal palaces, strengthen cyber-security at royal residences, and for the installation of energy efficient heating systems, with £11 million set aside to replace boilers nearing the end of their life at Windsor Castle.”
It sounds like it’s being put to good use. Maybe they’re going to give the staff a raise, too.

What’s funny is with the “slimming” of the monarchy under Charles, it kinda raises the question “doubling for what?”
Either security expenses are going through the roof, or they are acquiring a lot of tools and accoutrements of the office – such as more helicopters, etc. etc. while they’re claiming more maintenance and renovation expenses (which does kinda make sense).
But £11 million worth of boilers for Windsor Castle? Damn! That’s insanely expensive.

It says that they need it for upkeep of buildings which has been lacking and cybersecurity. Buckingham palace has needed over 100m alone so the numbers aren’t that weird. We’ll have to see how the sovereign grant is broken up in the future to check (as it is now, the biggest post is already building upkeep).
A bigger question is if more important palaces can be turned into mostly museums and thus be mostly open to the public almost full-time. Buckingham is already getting there (it will mostly be used for public and official events as no royals will live there), would it be possible to have the royals living in the Windsor castle area while building a fence around the castle to do the same with it? The royals have a bunch of extra artefacts which can be used to fill out the buildings. BP probably also needs more to fill it out, if more parts are made open to the public it can’t just be standard rooms.
