1. Colman Domingo first met his husband, Raúl, outside of a Walgreens in Berkeley, California. They said nothing, but couldn’t stop looking at each other. Three days later, Colman was on Craigslist looking for a used computer to buy, when he considered making a “Missed Connections” ad about their encounter. As it turned out, Raúl had already made one, just two hours before.

2. Brandi Carlile and her wife, Catherine Shepherd, met in a rather peculiar way. Catherine worked for Paul McCartney’s charity and had reached out to Brandi over the phone to donate Beatles memorabilia to her campaign, which focused on violence prevention. It must’ve been one heck of a phone call, because they started talking regularly — still over the phone — for a year after, before meeting in person in 2010.

Speaking on their first IRL meeting, Brandi told People, “Every time I talked to her over the phone, I thought I was talking to somebody who was like 65 years old. I don’t know why. I think because of her wisdom and her demeanor. Or maybe I thought she was Paul’s age or something. 3. Tig Notaro and her wife, Stephanie Allynne, have a similar on and off-screen romance that sparked to life back in 2013 on the set of their film In a World…, in which they costarred.

According to Stephanie, she first saw Tig in the waiting room at another audition not long before they officially met. Tig cracked a joke that she found so funny, she went to the sign-in sheet to learn her name. Once they hit it off on set of their movie, they began a “text friendship.” Speaking to the New Yorker, Tig said, “I started bringing my phone to the bathtub—I just didn’t want to miss anything.”

18. Beanie Feldstein met her wife, producer Bonnie-Chance Roberts, on set of the 2019 movie How to Build a Girl, which Beanie starred in. Technically, the two met for the very first time on a Skype call, in which Beanie never got Bonnie’s name.
