oof, this is a blow to physical media 🙁

if sony is daring to make the jump, microsoft is gonna jump at this since it’s what they’ve been waiting on for years now

Straight up no reason then to buy the next console right? Can just go with a pc get good prices and not pay for online. Lets hope nintendo will support physical through the Nintendo Switch 2s life

Doesn’t this sort of kill the concept of the console? I have a PS5 Pro so don’t use physical media with it – but if it’s going away entirely, “Playstation” becomes just a digital concept linked to computing power.

      Makes PS6 just another computer.

I guess it makes sense. Their research showed most people buy digital. Still sucks though, and you’d hope they could at least run fewer physical discs. But costs probably don’t justify this 🙁

      End of an era.

Really sucks for library access. Can’t try out a game before you buy, kids (or really anyone) who can’t afford games can’t play them

Terrible news for the gaming industry as a whole. The others will follow unless their base goes hogwild (they won’t) to keep physical copies.

    7. This is really bad. If we keep going that way people will never truly be able to own games

Yeah no, the only way I can afford to play games anymore is by selling them after I’m done and using that money to make the next game cheaper. No chance I’m buying PlayStations ever again. I would rather play on my PC and get games on sale via Steam (usually better deals), or something like cdkeys. If the game never becomes available on PC then so be it 🤷🏻‍♀️

And this is why I’m switching to pc. They’ve already made it so you NEED an internet connection just to play digital games, regardless of if it’s single or multi-player. If you haven’t been connected to the internet for 30 days your digital games are unplayable, so you have to spend money on ps+ to play games that don’t need an internet connection in the first place. I’m sick of this shit, subscription services were a horrible idea and now they’re all doing it.

Welp I guess gamestops going out of business in the near future. Gone the way of blockbuster I suppose..

    11. As a PC player, I can’t even remember the last time I bought a physical copy of a game. But. Game preservation and emulation are big here and there are many storefronts to choose from for competition. Just anti-consumer and greedy nonsense

So between xbox buying studios just to sell or shutter them, and now Playstation doing this, the whole gaming industry is turning into a joke, got it. Y’all enjoy having stuff you payed to ‘own’ getting yoinked whenever they feel like it. Hell Playstation is notorious for it, they just announced it for over 500 StudioCanal movies that people payed for and are now being removed with no refunds. SUPPORT PHYSICAL MEDIA.

If you’re going to go full digital, then you need to keep older games available for download!
