I highly doubt it is about vulgarity and more “we have reduced instances of slop in music”.

Yea this decline has been happening for like 20 years, this isn’t news just an update

Is this more evidence of Gen Z’s reported prudishness?

I think this is a two fold reason.
1. They can put a dollar amount on dropping an f bomb in your song now. It’s not worth it because the song will be excluded from places
2. Explicitness is no longer a taboo. It’s not rebelling against anything. I mean can you be sexually explicit in a song when the President is sexually explicit and offensive all the time?

Because nobody reads the article before commenting:
“Parris has argued that the trend appears to be driven by two major factors: listeners increasingly returning to older, more radio-friendly songs, and hip-hop no longer dominating Spotify’s biggest charts in the same way it did in the late 2010s.”

The shock value has disappeared and it’s not a selling point anymore plain and simple. Almost every big change in entertainment seems to stem from some shock or boundary pushing then it moves on.

I’m a metal fan. The songs with the most brutal, violent, uncomfortable lyrics often feature no actual ‘swear words’ whatsoever. There isn’t a single cuss in Slayer’s *Angel of Death,* and that’s a song about concentration camps.

Without reading the article, I’m assuming this is mainly just about a declining popularity of rap music.

This can’t be true. My Spotify algorithm will show a great deal of profanity in the last ten years

I’ve heard much more explicit language that doesn’t use swear words, so maybe it’s just a creative sport evolving.

It’s just awkward when you listen to music with kids in the car. I wish Spotify would give you the option to chose between explicit and clean versions of songs.

Or, hear me out. Artists are waking up to who truly owns the music industry and is sick of being their pawns in a game of “help destroy society”.

Music with anything to say about anything, creativity, and well… good music is in decline. Has been since at least 2010. At least raps popularity is waning while experimental microtonal music is having a moment.
