After M3GAN 2.0, Blumhouse and Atomic Monster’s burgeoning horror franchise got something of a downgrade. The first M3GAN was a monster hit, pulling in $180 million at the global box office with its tale of a sinister robot doll going awry. But then last year’s M3GAN 2.0 – which went much bigger, spinning the series into a summer blockbuster with more of an action bent – got the blue screen of death, making less than $40 million in total, despite great reviews. In the wake of that, things weren’t looking good for SOULM8TE – a M3GAN-verse spin-off with more of a grown-up angle, delving into the ‘robot girlfriend’ subgenre.
Due to hit cinemas at the start of 2026, SOULM8TE quietly disappeared from the release schedule, and has been little heard-of since. Until now. The trailer has finally arrived, touting a digital release for the movie – watch the teaser here:
Directed by Kate Dolan, from a script she co-wrote with Rafael Jordan, SOULM8TE stars Evil Dead Rise’s Lily Sullivan as Sara – an android, purchased by David Rysdahl’s widower David for… companionship, shall we say. But when he starts meddling with Sara’s coding, it soon becomes clear that’s a big mistake, bringing danger to him and those around him (including a new human love interest, played by The Boys’ Claudia Doumit). If it sounds like a mix of Companion and Obsession, well the trailer certainly leans that way too. The film is produced by James Wan and Jason Blum, under their Blumhouse / Atomic Monster partnership.
Notably, the trailer confirms the film is being distributed as a digital release by Universal – and it will be available in a few weeks from now, on 1 August. Stay tuned for more information on whether that’s an international release, or whether it’ll land in the US before arriving elsewhere. Either way, SOULM8TE is finally being let out of the box. Could it prove there’s life in the M3GAN series yet? Answers are currently loading…
