Emilia Clarke has revealed she hid her first brain hemorrhage from HBO for two weeks after wrapping the first season of Game of Thrones, fearing the network would write her character out of the show if they found out how serious her condition was.
Clarke said the hemorrhage struck in February while she was doing a plank at the gym, shortly after finishing filming. "I was in A&E until they worked out what was wrong with me. Then I went to a different hospital and they were plugging me in and I just kept trying to say I've got to go to work. I can't be here. How long is this going to take? And they're like, your brain is bleeding. It's going to take quite some time," she recalled.
Despite the severity of her condition, Clarke said she and her agent worked to keep the news from HBO until they were confident she would survive. Within a month of leaving hospital, she was doing press for the show's first season, still taking morphine.
She described the silence as rooted in shame and fear. "I was so ashamed that this thing had happened and that the people who had employed me might see me as weak or see me as something that could be broken. It was so like, 'No, fine. Fine. I'm fine,'" she said.

Always put your health first!
I know a lot of people fault Benioff and Weiss, but they were very accommodating for Emilia Clarke during this time
I don’t judge her, I’ll probably do it too. This is that big break role of a lifetime that absolutely jumpstarted her career.
She’s one of my favorite personalities in the celebrity world. She’s got such a genuinely warm and charismatic energy.
Muh Queen 🙌🏽
oh i definitely understand. a job got mad at me for ending up in ICU due to complications from an illness i was born with (which they knew about and were informed) and they refused to give me my pay. i was only 18 and it was only a summer job and theyd hired youths only for a “lets hire disabled youths to look inclusive!!” programme. these jobs rly dont care about you.
anyway much love to her, and shes stunning as always :’)
Unfortunately so relatable. So many issues that are out of your control such as health problems can get you fired from jobs. They just don’t gaf. But soo glad shes ok! She was always my favorite in GOT🥰
She was afraid they were going to Daario her!
She is always such a sweetheart. Incredibly genuine and personable it seems. My Khaleesi!
She is so strong for enduring all that, this woman deserves all my respect, I love her.
I have different health conditions, but that is so relatable on a few levels. Especially as someone with invisible disabilities, you never want to seem like you’re a weak link or you need more than other people do or you can’t pull your weight.
I was actually accused of something like that years ago but I had to get out of overtime that I absolutely would not have been able to do including being available and mostly on my feet for the day at a tradeshow.
I had to semi-disclose that I’m dealing with a health condition and I was still sort of accused of being lazy in different words. The boss at the time had lupus, so it became a comparison by the other manager.
I love Emilia, she’s always delightful, and I appreciate that she continues to talk about this and to share these stories and the organization that she and her mother started does good work to help people.
I’m just happy that my longtime crush’s eyebrows are still moving fluidly 🥰
“Bloody hell Emilia” sums it up lol
