Josie Lloyd’s 2023 novel, The Cancer Ladies’ Running Club, is due to be filmed in the town later this year.

The production, which is being supported financially by North Norfolk District Council, will star Maxine Peake, who starred in Shameless and Dinnerladies, and Gemma Jones, who appeared in the Bridget Jones and Harry Potter films.

Councillors believe the film will generate tourism is in the town and agreed to back it at a meeting on Monday.

No information was made public about the amount of financial support or the identity of the film.

However, details about the production have since emerged.

It is due to be called The Bright Side Running Club, the title of the book when it was published in the USA.

The book tells the story of Keira, a fortysomething mother-of-three and successful businesswoman.

Her life starts to unravel when she is diagnosed with breast cancer.

She embraces running and joins a running club for a group of women going through treatment for the condition.

The production was first launched at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.

Lloyd is to adapt the script from her own book while Sheree Folkson, whose credits include Bridgerton and Doctor Who, is set to direct.

Jones starred as Bridget Jones’ mother in the film series and as Hogwarts matron Madam Poppy Pomfrey in the Harry Potter movies.

Peake, who has received Bafta nominations, played Myra Hindley in ITV’s See No Evil: The Moors Murders.

Council documents state that the town should expect additional income while the shoot is actually taking place and then again when the film airs, as it raises the profile of the resort.

Other productions to film in Cromer include Alpha Papa, the 2013 Alan Partridge film and the BBC’s The Running Grave, based on the Robert Galbraith (J.K. Rowling) novels.

Housefull 3, a 2016 Bollywood hit, also shot on a large dance scene on the Pier.
