EXCLUSIVE: Following the success of The Housemaid, Paul Feig is looking to get even darker with his next thriller, as he is coming on to direct Detention for Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Platinum Dunes. The spec was written by Daniel Gold, with Michael Bay, Jason Blum, Brad Fuller, Cameron Fuller, Feig and Laura Fischer on as producers.

The logline is being kept under wraps. No studio is attached, but sources say Universal likely will get a first crack at it given its relationship with Platinum Dunes and Blumhouse Atomic Monster.

Steven Schneider, Bea Sequeira and Gold are executive producers. Detention is a Platinum Dunes and Blumhouse Atomic Monster production.

Fuller spearheaded the package from the start, finding the script and then bringing it to Feig. While the plot is being kept under wraps, sources say the film will be a horror thriller, which excited Feig, who, after successfully directing global hit The Housemaid this past Christmas, wanted to try something even darker.

Once Feig was on board, bringing the package to Blumhouse Atomic Monster made sense given that Platinum Dunes and Blum had made eight films together going back to the first Purge pic in 2013.

Feig most recently directed and produced The Housemaid, starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, which earned more than $400 million at the global box office, becoming Feig’s most successful film to date. He is in pre-production on a sequel, The Housemaid’s Secret, set for release on December 17, 2027. His proven track record of films have combined to gross more than $1.6 billion worldwide, including Bridesmaids, Last Christmas, The Heat, Ghostbusters, Spy, A Simple Favor and its sequel Another Simple Favor, which broke records as Prime Video’s second most-watched original thriller ever.

Gold is penning Ride Along 3 for Universal. He also recently sold his spec Tough Guys, a comedy to star Ryan Gosling and Will Ferrell, to Amazon MGM Studios,

Feig is represented by CAA and Sloane Offer Weber & Dern. Gold is repped by CAA, Underground and Ginsburg Daniels Kallis.
