If I remember correctly there’s not a single coptic professional footballer in egypts first division.
No copt has ever been president or prime minister of the country.
Their churches are often blown up while in full service.
Coptic girls are kidnapped, converted and sold off as wives with few repercussions.
In Cairo copts live in a ghetto where they’re forced to work as unofficial garbage collectors.
Etc, etc.
I’ll never forget when I stumbled on a video on Twitter of an egyptian mob breaking into a coptic person’s house most likely to lynch the inhabitants.
Copts and middle eastern Christians at large live as second and third class citizens all over the place with the exception of Lebanon. They’re faced with near constant instances of church bombing, legal religious restrictions, bigoted propaganda in the media, straight up murder, kidnapping, forced conversions, and so much more. They aren’t that far above where black americans were in the 1920s.
This is why I never supported them and never will.
It’s so strange when they start to care about diversity.
Representation in sports matters. If a large community is consistently absent, it’s reasonable to ask why.

So glad people are talking about this!! I feel as though it’s a topic that often gets ignored due to sensitivities.
In 400-600 CE Egypt was 90% Christian and 10% Jewish or pagan… now they’re 10% Christian and 0% Jewish. I wonder why…
My experience with Coptic people has personally been very bad as a non Arab nonwhite person, but I did notice this on their team. It’s common to meet Copts outside of Egypt.
I’ve never heard of this ethnoreligious group before and thankful for this post! Going down a little research rabbit hole and WOW, I really did not know anything about the region. Granted it’s not like I thoroughly studied Egypt and its history but it’s wild the one-sided view we’re given from media (especially fictional movies).
Egypt is missing Christians, Brazil is missing Catholics and that’s the reason they both lost.
I’m being a bit flippant because obviously there’s other issues, but there’s legitimately cases to be made that these facts contribute to the struggles they had, and these are legitimate social issues from within their respective countries.
I thought the Egypts World Cup run was about how corrupt FIFA is and how biased it is towards Argentina and Messi, who is a Zionist.
