At one point thought to be lost to time, Icon Collection lender Bryan Johns and Associate Curator Sophia Serrano reveal how Marilyn Monroe’s Pink Dress from her dance number “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” in the film ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’ was rediscovered and restored years later.

Marilyn Monroe: Hollywood Icon is an exhibition that will celebrate Marilyn Monroe—born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926—as a visionary actor and image-maker, examining the many facets of how she created and shaped her public image in the context of the classical Hollywood studio system.
Presenting hundreds of original objects, including posters, portraits, photographs, production documents, letters, and rarely seen personal materials—many of which will be on display for the first time—the exhibition will give unique insight into her agency in becoming a Hollywood icon. The exhibition will also feature an extensive display of Monroe’s screen-worn costumes, ranging from a dress featured in Love Happy (1949) to items from her final and unfinished film, Something’s Got to Give (1962). Major highlights include two costumes by Orry-Kelly from Some Like it Hot (1959), as well as the rarely exhibited famous pink dress by William Travilla from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953).

I can’t wait for some rich idiot to shove enough money at the Academy and destroy this dress by wearing it at some press event.
Why did you go to so much effort for the dress and not for the equally iconic two toned gloves?? That’s the detail everyone misses! Done intentionally so Marilyn’s hands could still be seen and stand out in the number.
Has the dress faded or was it the filming technique that made it look much more pink and dark?

I heard on one of Erin Parsons videos about her collection of Marilyn's makeup,that she had seen the pink dress because she was friends of the present owner,she mentioned the exhibition, but this is the first film I've seen of it. This dress had abig effect on me at 15/6 in the mid 70s l had a side hustle designing and have made dresses for my sister,girl friends & word of mouth enquires. I also had a huge collection of my grandmother's clothes,trunks of them from the turn of the century right up to the 70s & 80s. It's fascinating to see the structural work inside, & from experience know how hard it is to makeva dress this beautiful, simple, a little ruched,but without shoulder straps it was vital to start with the understructue.l go hopebit might travel to the V&A in London. Love the pink dress but the orange dress has always being my favorite and the one I think more when it comes to her wardrobe.
