NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani joined inmates at the Rikers Island jail to watch England’s World Cup semifinal against Argentina. The watch party was part of a program for prisoners rewarded for good behavior.

    1. Imagine being on your best behaviour and then getting the horrific punishment of having to watch a football match 😔😔

its been quite amazing to see how he’s intentionally humanizing specific groups around the city – immigrants, queer people, essential workers, and now even inmates which is probably the most overlooked of them all. his team knows his platform and how many eyes are on it and he has yet to miss, its inspiring.

    3. Reminder that Rikers is a cesspit filled with inhumane conditions. A massive politician, the head of the biggest city in the world, going to casually hang with inmates there to catch a sports game? That’s the kind of person we deserve in every office in this country. And we shouldn’t settle for less.

    4. everytime i see him he’s always doing truly kind acts of service and we rarely see that in politics i live in tx but man i wish i was a new yorker🫰🏽

    5. This an actual Christlike thing to do, so no doubt the pharisees are gonna hate him for it.

The usual suspects will hate on him for this when this is literally the same kind of thing their Jesus would have done and told them to do too.

This is beautiful and all but I wish it had been another game so I didn’t get a reminder of how badly we shat the bed last night. Screw you Zohran!

(On a serious note, this is pretty wonderful)

Mamdani has set a standard for what a politician of/by/for the people looks like…I have never seen a single politician, big or small, even attempt to help their constituents before they help themselves…

    9. We need a Zohran Mamdani in every part of the Country. Not just the politician. The person.

Remember, these guys can’t vote while in prison. Zohran’s not trying to curry votes for a future election. He’s genuinely just there because he wants to be.

He always looks like he’s having the time of his fucking life to boot. He’s just happy to be invited!

No wonder the right hates him so much. The nerve of him going around treating marginalized groups like humans…

I am a Michigander. I am so miserable about the heat, the smoke, data centers, and our geriatric democracy.

And then I see this guy taking every moment to do something good and right.

      Mamdani, thank you.

The intended purpose of prisons isn’t just to punish, but to rehabilitate. Nice to see a politician who still sees that.
