I hate when shows write these kinds of characters without actually talking to a gender fluid person. What that person was describing is being a-gender, meaning feeling an absence of gender. Gender fluid is when your gender doesn't feel fixed. You will absolutely feel like man or woman some days, that's in the definition of gender fluid. You don't have to feel both but you will feel like at least one, at least some of the time.
It's ironic because they're trying to make the joke that Max and Caroline aren't actually queerphobic but are perceived as it when in reality this show is trying to be perceived as supportive when they are actually being transphobic by writing that character.
