Horror movie fans in downtown Bakersfield have a new place to grab coffee and dirty sodas with a spooky twist.

Twisted Coffee, a new shop with horror film-inspired drinks and decor, opened earlier this month near Jin Sushi. The walls feature nods to classic horror movies, like Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th to name a few.

Owner Katelyn Marsh said the concept grew out of her family’s love of horror films.

“We’ve always been a big horror family. We’ve always loved watching movies such as Halloween, Scream, all the classics,” Marsh said. “And I just wanted to bring something different to Bakersfield that was like something everyone can enjoy.”

Among the shop’s offerings are dirty sodas, including one called “It’s Alive,” made with Sprite, green apple syrup and sweet cream. Marsh said many of the dirty sodas contain dairy, but they can be made without it, and customers can also customize drinks with flavors such as peach or strawberry.

Another drink, “Rotten to the Core,” combines caramel syrup and green apple with lemonade for what Marsh described as a candy apple flavor meant to give “Halloween vibes.”

The shop also serves espresso drinks, including a “Berry Scary Latte” made with two shots of espresso, white chocolate, strawberry puree and strawberry cold foam.

“I came up with a name,” Marsh said. “Um, I just thought it’d be so cute. Get like a little like family-friendly spooky option on there and very scary. Just sounds super cute to me.”

Twisted Coffee also features a drink called “Sweet But Psycho.” Marsh said her favorite movie is Pearl and that she dressed as the character for Halloween one year.

The shop opens at 9 a.m. and closes at 6 p.m. It’s located on 19th and Eye street in downtown Bakersfield.
