I live near a “real” IMAX and all the Odyssey tickets sold out in seconds. Very annoying.

>“We’re sold out in some theaters into the fifth week already,” Gelfond told *Variety*. “There’s certainly more demand. The problem is they haven’t made new Imax film projectors in about 50 years. So we retrofit them, rebuild them and part of our strategy is to see how far we can take it. But certainly, demand-driven, I’d like to see more.”
>“We build new projectors every day, but film projectors using this film — it’s just not practical,” Gelfond said. “Can all 2,000 of our theaters be film projectors? No. There’s just not that many around. But I think we can continue to grow it.”

I’m lucky to live in the Toronto area where there are 2 70mm imax screens within 30 minutes of me. It was truly an incredible experience. My girlfriend kept laughing at my face because apparently she could see I was in awe. I could’ve had another 2 hours. It was a surreal experience on that giant screen.

IIRC the film tray for The Oddysey is 850 pounds. That alone presents logistical issues.

What about dual laser that also supports 1.43:1?

As someone who used to work in pretty close proximity to this stuff, it is impractical to a point. State of the art IMAX projectors (the COLAs) cost literally 1 million American dollars to manufacture and they are made to order. Additionally, theatres often have to undergo costly construction fees to even get it into the building/project room.
