Three episodes landed at once on Disney+ this month, and Marvel Animation didn’t even wait for fans to catch their breath before locking in a weekly Wednesday rhythm through August. That timing feels almost mischievous: barely a week after “Days Of Past Future,” “A Force To Be Reckoned With” and “Rise Of Apocalypse, Part I” dropped, Marvel Studios was in Shanghai unveiling concept art for Avengers: Doomsday, complete with Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen back as Xavier and Magneto. One franchise is drawn, the other lives on a soundstage with the Russo brothers, yet both are suddenly speaking the same mutant language at the same moment. Whether Marvel planned that overlap or simply let it happen, X-Men ’97 and Doomsday are now impossible to watch separately.
X-Men ’97 opens season 2 with a triple premiere on Disney+
Marvel’s animated mutants are back. X-Men ’97 season 2 arrived on Disney+ on July 1, 2026, with three episodes released at once: “Days Of Past Future,” “A Force To Be Reckoned With,” and “Rise Of Apocalypse, Part I.” The nine-episode season now continues weekly, every Wednesday at 12:00 a.m. PT / 3:00 a.m. ET, through the finale on August 12, 2026.
A deeper bench of mutants, and a bigger threat
The new season widens the roster considerably. Sabretooth, Lady Deathstrike, Colossus, Danger, Boom-Boom and Exodus all join the story, alongside two full teams pulled from the comics: X-Force (Cable, Jubilee, Sunspot, Archangel, Psylocke) and X-Factor (Havok, Polaris, Strong Guy, Multiple Man, Wolfsbane). Looming over all of them is Apocalypse, whose rise gives the season its central arc.
Season 3 is already deep in production
Marvel greenlit a third season back in March 2024, and the studio is aiming for an annual release cadence going forward. Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation, has already seen much of it: “Season 3 is, I’ve almost seen animatics for the entire season, and it is incredible,” he said. The series counts Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito and original showrunners Julia and Eric Lewald among its executive producers, with Emmett Yonemura and Chase Conley directing episodes.
Meanwhile, the X-Men march into Avengers: Doomsday
The animated revival arrives just as the mutants take center stage in live action. On July 12, 2026, days after the season 2 premiere, Marvel Studios unveiled a full concept-art illustration for Avengers: Doomsday at the Bilibili World Expo in Shanghai, showing Doctor Doom alongside a cast of roughly 34 stars. Among them are several familiar faces from the Fox era: Patrick Stewart returns as Professor X and Ian McKellen as Magneto, joined by James Marsden as Cyclops, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Channing Tatum as Gambit, Kelsey Grammer as Beast and Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler. A teaser has already shown Xavier and Magneto reuniting over a game of chess.
Between a streaming series with a confirmed future and a blockbuster stacked with mutant royalty, the X-Men have rarely been this visible. Directed by the Russo brothers as part of the MCU’s Phase Six, Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters on December 18, 2026.
